Around 11 pm of Monday April 24th little Alexander, 4 and a half months old, started feeling uncomfortable. We thought it was gas that wasn't able to go through. That night he was in constant pain and not able to sleep for more than 5 minutes. At 3 am he woke up coughing and choking until he vomited a dark green liquid, which made him feel at ease for a few moments. At 5:45 his mom was changing his diaper when she found it full of blood. We knew then that something was wrong and we had to move fast. We took him right away to the Phoenix Childrens Hospital and got admitted into the E.R. Within minutes their team assessed an intestinal problem and with the help of an ultrasound they confirmed that little Alex was having a case of Intussusception. A second team tried to resolve the situation applying an air enema which unfortunately didn't work. From there we went right away into an O.R. The entire team at PCH did an outstanding job with Alex and by 10 am he was having surgery. The surgeons hoped that with a laparoscopy they didn't need to invade his belly but they found that part of his intestin and colon went necrotic and it was much worse than they expected. They had to manually unfold the intestin and resect the part that died due to the lack of blood supply. Ultimately the surgery was successful, removing the appendix in the process, and then it was time to recover.

The first two days were the most critical as there's always a chance to reoccur. Fortunately it didn't happen but the thursday night he started vomiting bile so Friday morning he needed help and the doctors put a nasogastric tube to suck the bile without adding pressure to his bowel.

They also had to put a PICC to give him medicines and also feed him since the last time he had milk was on Monday evening.

The PICC helped Alex a lot and by Saturday afternoon the nasogastric tube was gone.

By Sunday the nutrition program via PICC was cut in half and he started having milk again. By Monday he was eating on his own and happy as he normally is.

Finally Tuesday we were sent home. Hats off to the entire team of nurses, doctors, surgeons and volunteers that made the stay at Phoenix Childrens Hospital as easy and comfortable as possible for all of us.
We estimate that $10,000 will be needed to take care of the medical bills, expenses and time missed off work but we have decided that if there's any money exceeding what's needed for the medical expenses it will be transferred to Alex's college savings plan that we have set up with Fidelity.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your contribution.
