London to Berlin Bike Ride for Alex
Donation protected
On 21st May this year, a group of us left London to cycle 700 miles to Berlin in order to raise money for my 30-year-old nephew Alex Smith, who collapsed 17 months ago and was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) brain cancer.
Alex's Story
There is a video Alex made below (which is quite harrowing in parts) that gives an insight into the journey he's been on. Now, after a number of operations and a course of radiotherapy, Alex is undergoing a pioneering course of immunotherapy at a German Clinic.
This treatment offers a serious hope of controlling if not beating the cancer. In fact, a recent scan showed that the tumour has not regrown since the last surgery. This is very good news and shows just how life-changing the treatment is proving to be for him and could be for others. However, it is not yet available in the UK.
Unfortunately, this treatment is extremely expensive. Monthly costs for the vaccines come to £28,000. Having spent £150,000 of family money, and having raised a further £160,000 to date, available funds will run out soon. Hence this event, and our request for your support.
The Cyclists
In all, there are 34 people taking part in the bike ride – 13 who did a tremendous first day from London to Harwich; 10 who are joining us in Hannover for the last three days and 13 who are riding the full distance. For all of us this is a serious challenge and we've been training hard over the winter months. We've made friends with places like Box Hill in Surrey and we've begun to wonder what we ever did first thing in the morning and at the weekends.
UPDATE: We are currently on Day 4 of the ride and reached Osnabruck at lunchtime.
If you are able to sponsor us in whatever way you can to give Alex the best chance of survival and to pave the way for a possible cure for other cancer sufferers, please make a donation here and spread the word.
Thank you so much for your support,
Andrea
More about surviving GBMs through immunotherapy
A very big thank you to all our sponsors to date, including Chapman Ventilation for their generous contribution. It has been really moving to receive all donations especially from people who don't know Alex personally. We can't tell you how grateful we are.
THE CYCLISTS:
In addition to those pictured below, we have:
Nick & Sam Angell, Adele Eastman, Louis Hainault, Jackson Ireland, Lucy Howarth, Natasha Pinnington, Emily Kiddle and David Maslen
