Alex recovering from a Traumatic Brain Injury
Don protégé
Alex Morales is under the care of Kennedy Krieger Institute of rehabilitation related to a severe traumatic brain injury sustained on 8/2/2022 when he was struck by a drunk driver while riding his bike, and was left for dead. Due to this severe brain injury, Stroke secondary due to the brain injury, Alex has associated diagnoses of the left hemiparesis with decreased coordination, cognitive dysfunction with severe memory impairment and executive dysfunction, mixed receptive-expressive language disorder, cognitive communication disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. As a result of these new impairments from the injury sustained on 8/2/2022, Alex is disabled such that he requires specialized disability services in school (including 1:1 support) and assistance in the home. Currently his disabilities is expected to be permanent per medical diagnose. His injury may cause him to laugh or cry excessively, become restless, exhibit signs of agitation and anxiety. He has difficulty with short term memory and may become confused, disoriented, easily angered, and have excessive physical reactions to confrontation. Alex's medical team primary concern is his safety related to his memory. Will he remember to turn off the faucet after he's turned it on? Alex also lost his sense of smell... What if there is a fire? Alex, would not know what to do.
Unfortunetly, our health insurance plan does not cover home health aide services that Alex requires during recovery. Although, we have resources to caregiving agencies, they do not speacialize in TBI's.
Many (us included) may not realize how difficult it is to find and maintain a caregver that is adequately trained in Traumatic brain injuries and its costs.
Once again, our family humbly asks for help, Alex is still in recovery and has a long road ahead. Please, follow Alex CaringBridge page for the journey. https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/alexmoralesstrong
Thank you so much for keeping Alex in your prayers, God bless.
