First, Alex wants to thank everyone who has contributed to his go fund me page. With your generosity, Alex has been able to take advantage of alternative therapies that are not covered by Kaiser. When not in chemo, he has been going for daily visits to his integrative medical doctor, Dr. Singer, for infusions to boost his immune system. He has been able to purchase supplements and marijuana based products to additionally boost his immune system, give him increased energy and fight the cancer cells. He was able to visit an oncologist at UC Anschutz, Dr. Lieu, who reviewed Alex's options for medical trials and is genetically testing his cells for possible immunotherapy. Dr. Lieu and another Kaiser integrative doctor, as well as Dr. Singer and Alex's oncologist, Dr. Kono, are all now part of Alex's medical team. The money raised through this go fund me page has made all of that possible.
Alex and Kelly are so grateful for your support and the VERY great news is that Alex's last scan in April showed that the liver tumors have significantly shrunk and there is no more evidence of cancer in the colorectal area! The oncologists are surprised but Kelly and Alex attribute the improvement to, not only the chemo, but all of the alternative therapies that the generosity of friends has made possible.
But the fight is far from over. About a week after the very positive scan, Alex was hospitalized in ICU for 3 days. He was septic and started going into organ failure. We were so afraid we were going to lose him! The chemo that is successfully killing the cancer is also wreaking havoc on his healthy cells. Thankfully, he made it through, and after a week and a half in the hospital, he is now in rehab. He's lost a lot of strength from weeks of inactivity - he has great difficulty walking and requires trained staff to safely assist him moving around. We are hoping that his time in rehab will help him regain some muscle so he is better able to move about safely. Kelly, Kate and Hayden are looking forward to having him home again.
Once he returns home, we anticipate that Alex will continue to need the support of trained staff to help him. Kate, Hayden and, Kelly, will of course continue to be Alex’s main source of support, as will Kelly’s brother, Shawn, along with friends and both Kelly and Alex’s sisters. But, we think that trained assistance will be needed to be there when his family and friends cannot. Alex has fallen several times in the last few weeks and we expect that this will continue to be a risk for him during the days when he is alone. Once Alex is home, he is also hoping to continue visiting Dr. Singer for treatments not covered by health insurance to boost his immune system.
Therefore, we are hoping to be able to raise an additional $50,000. Unbelievably, Alex is still working as he is able to, and contributions from family members have helped. Kelly has had to cut back on her hours in order to be able to be available for Alex. Alex and Kelly wish they were able to do it alone but, given the limitations imposed by Kaiser and the multitude of needs, they are not. Thank you so much for your support.
