Seeking Support to Avoid Losing My Home
Donation protected
Dear Friend, Colleague, Acquaintance, or Stranger:
Thank you for taking a moment to understand my situation. My name is Alex and I am facing a serious risk of homelessness come December 2024 due to a divorce that was settled early this year. My ex-spouse and I separated in early 2022 when I moved into my current home, a modest, 500 sq ft studio in Westchester County. Due to ensuing financial conflicts, I had no choice but to initiate a costly contested divorce. As part of the divorce settlement, I have until December of this year to refinance my co-op unit or otherwise be forced to sell it as the mortgage is in both of our names. My co-op unit is about $1,000 a month with mortgage and maintenance; the total mortgage balance remaining is just over $60,000. In a normal world, I would refinance on my own or simply rent an apartment if I were forced to sell my co-op unit, but my credit is in such poor condition because of legal fees and financial challenges that necessitated the divorce that I have very few options. And I have no family in the region that I can stay with.
I have been lucky enough to be financially independent since graduating college and have had no safety net to rely on. I was responsible for many years with my financial wellbeing and built up my credit. This is never a position I have been in or wanted to be in - asking those around me to help me avoid homelessness. Unfortunately, because of the circumstances surrounding the divorce, I have been stripped of this independence for the foreseeable future.
I understand that some of you are not in a position to help - I do not know your situation or your story. However, if you can help, I would sincerely appreciate any contribution. Even $1 helps. In situations like this, if enough people give a little bit, if enough people can share a small piece of the burden, it can be lifted.
Here are ways that you could help me:
- Donate what you can - if you cannot, I understand
- If you are able to provide a larger sum of money in the form of a loan, please contact me
- If you are in a financial position to help me refinance my co-op unit and would be willing to do so, please reach out
- If you have advice for how to handle this situation, please reach out - I am trying everything I can think of to keep my home
- If you have any thoughts on ways for me to increase my income, including through new employment opportunities, please let me know
I am so grateful for any support or guidance you can provide. Homelessness is a scary prospect because it can cause everything in life to fall apart.
Thank you for taking the time.
