Alex’s Hill's Story
Imagine having a routine scan at 46 and being told your esophagus is clear and there is no cancer. Then 6 months later you are having chest pains and being told you have long covid, but when you get a scope to investigate, you are told you have stage 3 aggressive esophagus cancer. The news is traumatizing but to make matters worse you are told the cancer is too close to your heart and lungs to be treated. There is nothing they can do for you except give you some chemo and radiation to help keep you comfortable.
You have 2 young children, 7 and 10 and a beautiful wife and you want to be a part of their life and give them all the love and support for as long as you can. You work on changing your lifestyle and do some alternative therapies and for nine months you're able to reduce cancer and keep it from spreading. You live with hope.
Suddenly, you have trouble swallowing and find out the cancer is growing. You are still positive and live with hope. In your search for answers, you find a private clinic in Vancouver that is making strikes great with cancer. The cost is not covered by your medical system and although you are trying to stay positive you have exhausted all your finances.
The journey Alex and his family are going through is filled with uncertainty, fear, hope, love and loneliness.
As a friend, I have watched them courageously and positively forge ahead with hope, even when they were given no hope. Their income is greatly reduced and their expenses just keep going up.
I feel helpless but there is one thing that I and others can do and that is to help with their financial worries. A Go Fund Me account helps with the cost of the expensive alternate medical treatment, pay for costs while out of town, ferry, parking, extra meals, fuel, etc. Also just knowing that people are cheering them on, and willing to care for and support them is enough to lift the family’s spirits.
I also know that times are very difficult for most people and many people are just getting by. Even a few dollars can make a difference and help lift spirits. Please spare a few dollars if you can.
Thank you to all who are willing to give.
Sincerely,
Debbie Smith
