A Leg Up for Alex

Donation protected
In 2009, Alex fractured his foot in a softball game.  A plate and three screws were inserted into his foot, which meant that Alex could no longer bend his foot in the middle and he could no longer run. However,  he could still handle the pedaling motion of cycling, which ultimately led to an increased passion for the sport.

Alex began riding with Plano Bicycle Association (PBA) and quickly became anchored in the cycling experience, camaraderie and the organization. In fact, Alex enjoyed his new cycling community so much, that in 2014, he volunteered for and was elected President of the club,  dedicating his time and energy to bettering the organization and increasing its presence in North Texas.

But in 2017, complications with Alex's injury led to the amputation of his left leg, just below the knee.  Transitioning took some time, but eventually, he became used to life with a prosthetic and was even able to begin riding again.  Until recently.

An amputee's residual limb is subject to change over the initial two year period. That means the socket that fits the limb to the prosthetic will no longer fit properly.  Since Alex's surgery in March of 2017, he has received three sockets to accommodate the changes in limb composition.

Alex wears 13-15 layers of socks to make his current prosthetic fit as much as possible. His prosthetist has made every adjustment possible short of getting a new prosthetic. It's time for Alex's final prosthetic (or at least until a new one wears out in 4-7 years).

Alex has tried a variety of arrangements to fund a new prosthetic without success. The price of a new prosthetic leg can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000.  This cost is beyond what Alex and his family can afford.   So Alex has been suffering from the issues that come with an ill-fitting prosthetic. These include poor balance and instability which has led to pain in both knees, back pain, fatigue, reduced mobility, intact limb pain, irritation and skin issues, and general discomfort.

We are reaching out to the community for our friend Alex in an effort to raise the money he desperately needs to replace his ill-fitting prosthetic leg with a new and proper fitting one. Our hope is that Alex will not only experience the joy of riding his bike once more, but also live his life again, free from pain and discomfort.

Many hands make light work. A small amount from each of us will add up and will make a difference. Thank you for your generosity.
