Alex & Bree Motorcycle Accident Recovery

Hi friends. As many of you know, my brother Alex and his girlfriend Bree were in a very serious motorcycle accident while on vacation in Hawaii on January 27th. On their way back from the beach, a truck pulled out in front of them causing the bike to slam into the side and sent Alex and Bree flying about 15 feet from the crash. Rushed by ambulance to a hospital in Honolulu, Bree sustained an extreme laceration on her leg leading to emergency surgery and Alex broke several ribs, bruised a lung and broke a tooth. We are beyond grateful that their helmets kept them alive and that neither of them were hurt worse.

 

The last few weeks have been a grueling recovery for both of them. Since their return to Portland they have been living with my mom Betsy as they haven’t been able to cook or totally care for themselves. Normal, simple activities like breathing and moving are extremely painful for Alex. Bree is still unable to bear weight on her leg and was told by her Physical Therapist it will take 6 months to a year to regain full mobility. As she has exhausted all of her PTO and sick time for the year, she is now at a reduced salary until she is able to return to her work as an elementary teacher. To make matters worse, the driver of the truck did not have insurance or a driver's license.

 

After Alex’s insurance denied the claim, they are left with over $100,000 worth of bills and expenses. While their medical insurance will hopefully cover the majority of their hospital/recovery costs, they will still likely owe between $15,000 - 20,000 in costs out of pocket.

 

Alex is truly my favorite man on the planet and it has been such a joy welcoming Bree into our family. I am really hopeful that between our networks, we will be able to help them shoulder this burden. They are both on a long road to recovery and working through constant pain and discomfort. They are sincerely thankful for the support of friends and family as it greatly encourages them during this time of healing.
