On Tuesday, September 10th, 2019, Aleudy De Los Santos, beloved son and father of one, passed away at the age of 27.
Aleudy was born on October 4th, 1991. He was born in the Dominican Republic and raised on the island until he was 3 years old, when his parents came to the United States in November of ‘94. He was an only child until December of ‘95 when his sister was born. Aleudy was a proactive student and was involved in many school activities such as the Broadway musical “Remember my name”. He played various instruments including the cello, drums, bass, guitar, and the piano; the piano was his favorite instrument. He also sang and composed music with his sister in private.
Aleudy was a hard worker and delved into many different types of jobs. Jobs that range from being an electronic service technician at the company ESCC to fixing rooftops in Virginia. He was skilled in doing electrical jobs and home improvement, a skill he originally learned from his father.
Aleudy became a father on May 1st, 2013 to his first and only son Nathan De Los Santos. He was so nervous and excited at the sight of his first born that he even fainted during the birth. He was a great father, and cared deeply for his now six year old. He never missed a graduation ceremony, special occasion, or ever stopped picking his son up from school, even when he was already in pain and sickly.
He was diagnosed with a thymoma and had surgery to remove it in October of 2018. In the middle of surgery doctors noticed a mass attached to the nerves of his left arm. They were not able to remove it completely because if they did his left side would have been rendered immobile. They tested a sample removed from the mass and in November of 2018 he was diagnosed with Leukemia, cancer of the blood.
No one has ever heard Aleudy complain during this difficult process of treatment in the past 10 months. He was head strong, strong-willed, and never gave up on his life even for a second. His last days were filled with an “I Love You” to everyone that would stop by to see him, he would never let them leave without letting them know how much he cared. If anyone asked how he was he would bring his thumb up as a sign of him being ok. He listened to worship music, read the Bible with his parents, watched Family Feud, and was constantly laughing with his family and making jokes. He disliked drinking every single home made remedy, he even told his mother at one point “One of these days I’m gonna smack that cup” half serious. Regardless of how he felt about it, he still drank all of his medicines. He always remained firm in his faith in the end, and continuously fought to breath for another moment with his family.
His last scenery outside of the hospital was the day before he passed. Two of the wonderful nursing staff of Weill Cornell Hospital decided to take him on a walk, though many opposed due to his condition. Nonetheless he was taken outside, he saw cars, trees, heard the busy noises of New York and the bird’s chirping. He breathed fresh air and said he’d be back to do it again. The next day, Tuesday, September 10th, 2019 with his mother and grandmother in the room, Aleudy closed his eyes as if to sleep. His spirit was swept up by the Lord and was laid to rest eternally by God’s side. He felt no pain, he simply fell asleep.
The journey was difficult, it was long for everyone especially Aleudy; but we have won the ultimate battle. In the end he just wanted everyone to remember “I Love You” before you left the room.
Aleudy is survived by his son Nathan, his parents, Gilberto and Zunilda, his sister Darlyn, and all of his extended family members.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 16th, 2019 at 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Church of God 680 East 138th St Bronx, NY 10454. Aleudy nació el 4 de octubre de 1991. Nació en la República Dominicana y se crió en la isla hasta los 3 años, cuando sus padres llegaron a los Estados Unidos en noviembre de 1994. Fue hijo único hasta diciembre de 1995, cuando nació su hermana. Aleudy fue un estudiante proactivo y participó en muchas actividades escolares como el musical de Broadway "Remember my name". Tocó varios instrumentos incluyendo el violonchelo, la batería, el bajo, la guitarra y el piano; el piano era su instrumento favorito. También cantó y compuso música con su hermana en privado.
Aleudy era muy trabajador y se dedicaba a muchos tipos de trabajos diferentes. Trabajos que van desde ser un trabajador technico electronico de servicio en la compañía ESCC hasta arreglar techos en Virginia. Era experto en trabajos eléctricos y mejoras en el hogar, una habilidad que aprendió originalmente de su padre.
Aleudy se convirtió en padre el 1 de mayo de 2013 de su primer y único hijo, Nathan De Los Santos. Estaba tan nervioso y emocionado al ver a su primogénito que incluso se desmayó durante el parto. Fue un gran padre, y se preocupó profundamente por su hijo de seis años. Nunca se perdió una ceremonia de graduación, una ocasión especial, o dejó de recoger a su hijo de la escuela, incluso cuando ya estaba dolorido y enfermo.
Se le diagnosticó un timoma y se sometió a una cirugía para extirparlo en octubre de 2018. En medio de la cirugía los médicos notaron una masa adherida a los nervios de su brazo izquierdo. No pudieron quitarlo completamente porque si lo hubieran hecho su lado izquierdo se habría quedado inmóvil. Se analizó una muestra extraída de la masa, y en noviembre de 2018 se le diagnosticó leucemia, cáncer de la sangre.
Nadie ha escuchado a Aleudy quejarse durante este difícil proceso de tratamiento en los últimos 10 meses. Tenía su mente y voluntad fuerte, y nunca se dio por vencido en su vida ni por un segundo. Sus últimos días estuvieron llenos de un "Te amo" para todos los que pasaban a verlo, nunca les dejaba salir sin decirles cuánto le importaba. Si le preguntaba como se sentia el levantaba su dedo indicando que siempre estaba bien. Escuchaba música de adoración, leía la Biblia con sus padres, veía Family Feud y se reía constantemente con su familia y hacía bromas. No le gustaba beber los remedios caseros, incluso le dijo a su madre en un momento dado: "Un día de estos le voy a dar una galleta a ese vaso" medio serio. Independientemente de cómo se sintiera al respecto, aún así bebía todas sus medicinas. Siempre se mantuvo firme en su fe al final, y luchó continuamente para respirar otro momento con su familia.
Su último vista fuera del hospital fue el día antes de su muerte. Dos de los maravillosos enfermeros/as del Hospital Weill Cornell decidieron llevarlo a dar un paseo, aunque muchos se opusieron debido a su condición. Sin embargo, fue llevado afuera, vio autos, árboles, escuchó los ruidos de los pajaros y de Nueva York. Respiró aire fresco y dijo que volvería a hacerlo de nuevo. Al día siguiente, martes 10 de septiembre de 2019 con su madre y su abuela en la habitación, Aleudy cerró los ojos como para dormir. Su espíritu fue levantado por el Señor para descansar eternamente al lado de Dios. No sintió ningún dolor, simplemente se quedó dormido.
La jornada fue difícil, fue largo para todos, especialmente para Aleudy; pero hemos ganado la batalla final. Al final sólo quería que todos recordaran "Te amo" antes de que salieran de la habitación.
