(March 9, 2017) Uplate from Aletha herself:
It is beyond my capacity to express my gratitude to each of you for your monetary gifts over the last many months. You made my dream trip to Iceland a reality, and your generosity allowed me to relax in more than one sticky situation involving my health care needs. All of that is straightened out now and therefore we will no longer be accepting money on this site.
I encourage you to look for updates on my condition and to leave messages if you wish at CaringBridge.org. You may connect with me there by a name search: aletha worrall, or by my CaringBridge website: Aletha – Living Well .
Again, I thank you!
Original post:
As an employee of Aletha's for 3 short years, I have been spoiled rotten. I get to see this generous, hilarious, witty, gem of a woman every working day. It's still a shock that soon all of that will change.
In June, Aletha was diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma with metastasis to the liver and lungs. She was feeling some unusual aches and shortness of breath, and underwent a slew of tests and weeks of waiting until finally recieving the devastating results. This type of cancer is extremely rare, aggressive, and resistant to treatment. The doctors said then she has 9 months to live. She's 59 years old.
So what do we do as employees, family, friends, clients? How can we possibly express and extend our love, appreciation, sorrow, grief, for the woman whom 'always made you feel she was happy to see you?' Frankly, it's impossible, but collectively we can do something to make her remaining time as awesome as she is. A group of us got together and decided to create a travel fund to help her realize the trip of her dreams. Please join us!
Aletha has always wanted to go to Iceland and Prague (and Barcelona and Berlin). We're going to make that happen! This fund will help her pay for the trip in early October. She has close friends to travel with who are saavy on her health concerns and needs, so no need to fret about that. Let's help her travel in style and comfort. Eat truffles (both kinds!) at every meal. Soak in the hot springs, dance flamenco, stroll through Bohemia. Bask in the glory of the Northern Lights. What ever she wants to do.
We set the goal high because any of your generous donations left over from her adventures will be put towards future medical expenses. Though Aletha ran a thriving and respected framing business, Studio Frameworks in Oakland, CA, she only really got it rolling relatively late in her life, therefore not amassing much savings.
After selling off the business assests and clearing out the studio, she'll be moving to Colorado where she has the support of her mother, two brothers, and plenty of friends. And plenty of fish to catch.
As all of you who know her know, she was always more concerned about others before herself. I struggle to describe her spirit justly, I'm at a loss. I hope to be adding to this post with words from others who have been lucky to have known her for much longer than I.
Please give generously, and spread the word to anyone you know who knows her. Thank you. Thank you Aletha for brightening the lives of everyone you encounter.
Also, please continue to respect her wishes to limit contact. The outpouring of support and advice is immense, and can get overwhelming. Thank you for understanding.
