Our darling Alejandro is having top surgery

Those of us who know Alej are no stranger to their love, compassion and generosity. They are the silliest person I know, the first one to offer an ear or to drop food when a loved one needs it, and have an unending passion for knowledge and building a better world. Above all, they are truly committed to growth and development in service of intersectional justice. In short, they are truly special.

Gender-affirming surgeries in Australia overwhelmingly take place in the private system and are not covered by Medicare, thus making them inaccessible to most of us unless we get outside help. Alej has been doing his best to self-fund this surgery, but as cost of living and daily financial stressors increase, staring down the full cost alone makes it feel impossible.

This is where we, as loved ones, comrades and community come in.

Every person should feel safe in the world, seen and respected and at home in their body.
