One of the finest people I know, is having a tough time. Her mom was recently diagnosed with ALS. As you can imagine the medical bills have started to pile up. As she's the person who always puts others first, helps them with no questions asked, it's now time to help her without hesitation. Here's the situation:
My mom was diagnosed with ALS in May 2021. By then she had lost most mobility in her legs and was using a wheelchair. Her diagnosis was 1st stage moderate, and all in all was healthy and we were given the green light to travel to Mexico by her doctor. She had been missing her home and wanted to see her siblings and mother who she hadn't seen in 2 years.
Once in Mexico, she was able to rest and relax and be home for about 10 days. Then she started to not feel so great. She was tired and didn't have energy. She was also having a hard time breathing. It was very alarming and scary. We had to bring her two hours by ambulance to a private hospital.
The doctors diagnosed her with a mild lung infection and low sodium. For someone who’s healthy this isn’t a problem. But for someone with ALS whose lungs are weakened, it is a problem and she required assistance breathing. The private hospital had the equipment she needed, a BiPAP machine, which is noninvasive ventilation to help her breath.
The good news is she is getting better. But because we are in Mexico with no insurance, we have to pay out of pocket for everything. We also anticipate need to rent equipment -a portable BiPAP machine and/or oxygen for the trip back to the US to so we can see her specialist. At the moment we’re using credit cards to cover costs, but there’s only so much that can cover.
We hate having to ask and we don’t do so lightly. We know everyone is having a tough time of it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
