Alec's Brain Cancer Battle
Donation protected
Alec Wirt enjoys the MMA. This is not surprising for a 28-year-old former high school wrestler who also trained in Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai and Kung Fu. What is shocking is why I know this about Alec. We are discussing a bucket list of the things he would like to do and share with his family after finding out he has stage IV glioblastoma over the Christmas holidays. No such list should exist for a vibrant young person just as no mother should be stressed to find treatment for a son with the most aggressive form of brain cancer. Yet this is exactly what Karla Quesenberry is facing.
Karla is a decorative painter in Houston, Texas where she is an active member in both the local and national professional community. I’ve known Karla for years as a student, colleague and long-time friend. Her talent, grace, and cheerfulness make her well-liked in our small art circle. It is easy to see where Alec gets some of his good humor. As Alec and I get to know each other, he shares his concerns about his dog, Lakota, an 18-month-old shepherd mix he adopted. He worries about her care while he is getting treatment. At the same time, he speaks fondly of his family which includes 2 brothers, a sister and many friends he calls family. In fact, we delayed this fundraiser so he could tell his little sister of the diagnosis himself. His answers to my questions are peppered with “LOL’s.” Karla fondly calls him her “cowboy” when Alec tells me he is a huge Texas Country Music Fan. His favorite actor is Nicholas Cage. Alec is also a fan of the zombie genre-well, that seals it! This is an interesting person. What is never present? Any self-pity. It is truly remarkable
Karla is a self-employed mother getting ready to accompany her son on a battle for his life. It will be long and costly. I know this as the caregiver to my husband Bruce who had stage IV lung cancer. The help we received from family and friends allowed Bruce to have a better quality of life without the added burden of financial loss. The memories of this time are what I cherish most. I wish the same for Alec, Karla and their family-And I think you do as well.
Below is Alec’s bucket list. He knows he may not get them all done, especially the travel, but hopes to share as many activities as possible with those he loves. Alec begins 5 day a week radiation for the next 6 weeks. The treatment needs to be aggressive as the tumor was removed before the Thanksgiving holidays. Obviously, this family had an unimaginable holiday season. Let’s show them that the giving spirit didn’t end last week. Thank you for taking the time to read a bit about Alec and consider making a contribution. If you can't donate funds then you might have connections for making a bucket list item happen. This would be appreciated as well.
Sincerely, Rebecca Slaton
