The Ale N Wich Pub is a small, but mighty, New Brunswick institution. For 46 years we have weathered ever kind of storm that has blown by the corner of Louis & Hamilton. But this pandemic has been chipping away at the foundation of The Wich. Not the building, but the true cornerstone of why people keep coming back, our Employees.
Our staff had to suffer a layoff from March 17th to June 15th. When they returned it was to limited drinking on our outdoor patio, which necessitated the cutting of shifts, not employees. The return of indoor drinking, to 25% capacity, didn’t help since Rutgers is closed to most students. Now we have to close indoors at 10pm for predictably the next 5 to 6 months.
All of the latter has resulted in an unbelievable financial burden on our staff. But no one has quit. The holidays are around the corner, and it doesn’t look good.
Through out the years The Wich has never turned away any charity looking for help. We have hosted many fundraisers with our staff volunteering instead of being paid. Payroll is our biggest expense, and even with having cut our hours, it is getting tougher and tougher to make. We do not want to lay anyone off, especially as we get into the holidays. So now it is our turn to ask for your help.
Anything raised will go to our employees, payroll for the next 6 months and Christmas bonuses.
Think of it as a virtual tip. Give what you can, and then some. Many memories, friendships, relationships, marriages, divorces and children are the result of having a fun night at The Wich. Even if you haven’t been here in years, find it in your heart and wallet to help out. Any amount, no matter how small will help.
So close your eyes and think about all those good times you had at The Wich and give a little. When this is all over we will still be here, battered but ready and willing to get back to the way it used to be.
