Hey everyone--I'm a PhD student working on an Ecology degree and my two dogs basically run my life.
On Sunday, my 8-month-old black lab had an accident when I went to pick him up from the trainer where he was getting some training for hunting. Not used to being on a tie out because I don't use them, he got excited to see me and ran full speed from one end to the other, snapping himself back by his neck and flipping over. A 70 lb dog running full speed is a lot of force...
Over the next few days, we found out that he has at least several fractures in his back and possibly one slab fracture on a vertebrae which is now pushing on his spinal cord and causing loss of motor control and muscle weakness in his rear legs and lower spine.
With an older dog, this would most likely be an injury that would lead to putting them down, but Aldo is only 8 months old and still in good spirits. He seems to be managing his pain well. He's eating and drinking normally, acts alert, likes to chew on his toys, and still has normal bathroom habits. We have to carry him in and out and support him so he can do his business or when he wants to sit or stand to make sure he doesn't further injure himself.
We have been through several vet visits already and have medication to help manage his pain and inflammation. Now we are traveling to see a veterinary neurologist to determine if he will need surgery.
As a graduate student, I'm woefully short on funds and his vet bills continue to grow, particularly if he needs an MRI and/or surgery. He will also need rehabilitation after he's healed, regardless of whether he needs surgery or not.
I can't see putting him down just because I can't afford his vet bills as a viable option, so I'm asking for help with his medical costs. Aldo needs help as soon as possible, and I can't even say how much it means for you to donate. You'll be helping to care for one of my best friends, who I want to be around for a long time still.
Anything you can give will be put to good use and is so much appreciated.
Much love and thanks always,
Mandy and Aldo
