Alcatraz Swim for Food Allergies

Hi everyone, I will be participating in the 2022 Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim with several classmates on August 7, 2022. This is a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz back to the San Francisco shore and the water temperature will be in the 50Fs … brrr. And who knows what’s lurking in the murky bay water!
Last year, I swam this same race with 700 swimmers from 34 states and 7 countries. It was an eye-opening experience that helped me grow as a person. This year, I want to build on that and swim for a cause that is near and dear to my heart.
I was diagnosed with severe food allergies at the age of 4 and had my first anaphylaxis episode 2 weeks after the diagnosis. This was the direct cause of much of my anxiety as a child. Fear was always present whenever my family and I went out to eat. At the age of 9, an opportunity came where I was able to enroll in a clinical trial with the hope of being desensitized to a number of foods that were lethal to me.
The clinical trial transformed my life. Thanks to the groundbreaking research at the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy & Asthma Research, a year of oral immunotherapy (OIT) resulted in me being able to do what regular children take for granted like attending a birthday party without the fear of having anaphylaxis.
I’d like to raise awareness and funds towards food allergy research. I’d love for more food allergies patients to benefit from life-changing treatments like the one I had.
