Albert's Housing Fund

Albert Warren needs help to pay for somewhere to live, where he will be safe and cared for, in his current state of diminished mental and physical capacity.

In 2014, my father Albert experienced an intercranial hemorrhage, which put him into intensive care at Mass General for several weeks, and Spaulding rehab for another month or so. He had to regain the skills to eat, share his thoughts, and walk. There wasn't much hope of a full recovery, but over the years he has graduated from wheel chair to cane (or walker), and he has been living in a smallish care home for the past three years where he receives three meals a day, and help with daily activities. This home, the Good Shepherd, in Oakland California, had been giving us a deal on a shared room, paying only $1500, because they helped us out when I told them that was all we could afford. But their generosity has run out, and we had to start paying $2500 per month.

Albert's current income is $1600 per month, which goes toward his rent and cell phone bill, and I save any extra there is every month for other expenses. He still has a stack of medical bills from various trips to the hospital last year, adding up to about $4000.

I know what you're thinking, "Isn't there any program or government fund that can help?" Well. Let me tell you. I have been working on it.

Veteran's Aid:
I am waiting for some red tape and paperwork to clear before I can find out once and for all whether the Veterans Association will help. (Albert served in the National Guard one day short of the minimum number of days it takes to receive Veteran's status).

Medicaid:
Albert is considered "too well" by the standards set for Medicaid receivers, to have them pay for his housing, even though he needs help with almost everything. I am still pursuing a diagnosis on his mental state, which is still unclear. He has trouble keeping up with current events, though he always knows the correct date, and he hopes to return to his wood working, though this is definitely not an option. Medi-Cal (the California Medicaid Program) miiiight cover his stay in a care home if he has an official dementia diagnosis.

Medicare:
They only cover skilled nursing facilities when a person has just emerged from a hospitalization, for 100 days. No exceptions.

I have been looking for another place for him to move into, but options with a lower price tag are almost nonexistent. So for now, he has to stay where he is, which, at that price, is still one of the cheapest places around. And until the point that something comes through in his favor from Medicaid or the Veterans Association, he needs help with rent.

Anything you can give would be amazing! I have set a goal, but really, I don't know how long we will be needing help, so don't let that goal stop you from donating more!
Please share with anyone who knows Albert! I don't have a whole lot of his friends and family contacts.

Thank you SO MUCH
