Premise: "After fleeing a cartel, a boy must let his family go and start a new life for himself or be destroyed by guilt."
This story is based on a guy I knew personally in high school. Wanting to help out his mom and younger siblings, he took the only job available in his tiny village: working for a local drug cartel. When he realized what that actually meant, he was forced to flee, essentially disappearing and cutting off contact with his family for their and his own safety. I met him before he was in the cartel- a lovely, joyful, funny guy. And I saw him once right after he'd fled the cartel. He was completely changed: somber, grieved, quiet.
I never saw him again.
This short film is in honor of him- and all the other youth with similar stories in Mexico. And, in a way, it's my prayer for him. I hope to open a window into a part of Mexico's current story that is little known to people both there and in the US, working to portray the beauty as well as the brokenness of my home country. And I hope to tap into the possibility for hope we all have even in our darkest hours.
The film will be shot on location in Mexico from July 2nd- July 12th. All dialogue will be in Spanish and subtitled in English. Our U.S. crew will be working alongside Mexican crew members and actors
These funds will continue to cover crew meals, housing and transportation as well as gear insurance and expenses. We're looking for financial donors to help make this film happen. No amount is too small- $10 can cover a crew member's meals for a day. Every bit is tremendously appreciated- and useful!
All donors will be mentioned in the end credits (unless otherwise requested).
We're currently on the ground in Mexico, with one shoot down, and 7 more to go.
