Alayne Martell-Sending Leukemia to the Penalty Box

Doação protegida
As anyone that has personally battled cancer or supported a loved one through it, you know there are many unsupported costs that accumulate throughout the long battle. This is why the athletes of ringette have started this GoFundMe initiative to help offset these costs so Alayne and her family can simply focus on the task at hand: sending leukemia to the penalty box. The greatest aspect of the sport of ringette is the community; when one person struggles, we all feel it. Regardless of jersey colour or rivalries, when someone in the ringette community needs our help, we step up.

After a rollercoaster week of ringette at the 2019 World Ringette Championship in Burnaby, BC, most of the ringette community returned home, albeit a little bruised, sore and tired, but nevertheless, we got to go home in good health. One of our forces in the ringette community, Alayne Martell, didn’t get to come home and instead, in an instant, had her world completely turned upside down. What started as getting a swollen leg checked prior to flying home resulted in a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of getting to know Alayne around the rink at Nationals or Worlds, she is the quick witted person that works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the ringette community updated and works hard to get exposure for ringette and our numerous athletes. In fact, most of you active on social media have probably interacted with Alayne without even knowing about it. Alayne’s official title is Media and PR Consultant for Ringette Canada which means she’s the person that shares, reposts, and likes all the stuff we tag Ringette Canada on social media. She’s also the person that sits in freezing cold rinks and loud lobbies to write articles for daily updates at the major ringette competitions.

Alayne has started her first chemo treatments in Vancouver. She will be there for the next 4-6 weeks and the hope is that she can ultimately be transferred home to Nova Scotia for further treatments. Even when she gets back home, Alayne lives 3.5 hours away from where she will get treatments.

Thank you for considering our initiative to help Alayne and her battle with cancer.
