Hello everybody,
As many of you know, last summer I was blessed with the opportunity to go to Alaska and spend two weeks getting to help run football camps and talk about my faith with local kids. I haven't been shy about saying it was a life changing experience for me. I got to come out of my shell and open up more than I am used to about my story and my faith. Getting to work with other current/former student athletes, the amazing people at Alaska missions, and other groups from around the country was an incredible experience. I was also blessed to be able to see one of the most beautiful places God created in Alaska.
This summer, we are going back! We will be there for 2 weeks running football and basketball camps, and just hanging out with kids up there who don't have opportunities like this for the majority of the year.
For those of you who aren't sure about why we chose Alaska, I have some figures to help see the bigger picture:
-Less than 9% of the state claims any association with the Christian church
-The state's suicide rate is 9X that of the national average. Some villages it is as high as 200X the national average.
-The state says that 1/3 of all children in bush Alaska will be sexually assaulted by a close family member over the course of their life.
These facts alone show why we go there. The kids there are no different than the kids here, they just aren't as exposed to God as we are here in the Bible belt. Getting to see them begin to gain a legitimate interest in the Lord is an awesome thing. Having kids ask me, just a normal sinner with plenty of issues, about Jesus, is eye opening and proof that He can use absolutely anybody to further His kingdom. I had the time of my life getting to know the kids and the people I got to work with and I cannot wait to get back.
