Alaska for Special Alaskans
Donation protected
I am a Special Education teacher working with students that have a behavioral or emotional disorder requiring that they be educated in a separate program than their peers. These student are in an SBBS program (site based behavioral supports). Because of their disability they have had zero opportunities to see any of Alaska beyond their home or apt. I have had great success with this population and have had an archery program for them. I now want to expand their world's by taking them on sightseeing/fishing in the beautiful Prince William Sound. I want to get them outside of Anchorage and be able to see this incredible state. I have a boat that I would like to take them out for whale watching, wildlife viewing and fishing in small groups. To be able to do this I would need additional equipment, increased insurance, and make some modifications (additional railings, additional survival suits, Emergency beacon, satelite phone because of zero cell phone coverage once out of port.electrice reels,) to my boat (3500-$5000) so that I could take out any of the students regardless of their physical limitations. The funding would also help me pay for food and gas (3-$500 ) per trip. Because of the needs of these students I will have to have additional adults to assist and help with the students. I feel it will allow them to actually see and do some of the things they hear about but have never done. In the most incredible state with some of the greatest scenery and wildlife viewing it's unbelievable that a resident can not access these activities. I hope to have funding by break up (early spring) so I can have modifications done to my boat and acquire the additional equipment I need. As a teacher I spend quite a bit of money for my students in the classroom but I do not have the funds to be able to give this to my students. If I have the work done I will be able to get as many trips as weather will allow. Thank you so much for considering my project and I hope you can find it in your heart to help. These kids have had enough roadblocks and bad experiences in their life. I want them to see, hear, and enjoy the beauty of our state as well as being able to experience the great outdoors instead of reading about it. I am so thankful for any help you could give. The value to these kids is not measurable but the difference it could make in their lives is priceless.
