My father loves being around his family. If you asked him what he loves most, his first (and possible second and third) answer would be to spend time with his wife, children, and grandchildren! Dad loves to entertain, play games, cook out and enjoy life at his home on Lake Tawakoni. A year or so ago he purchased a used jet ski for his family to enjoy. Unfortunately, it needed some repairs after using it for a season. The day he got it from the repair man, he took it out on the lake, wind whipping through his hair as his grandchildren took turns hugging him while riding on the seat behind him. He was so excited for his jet ski to be working again. But, his joy would only last for a few hours. After a few trips out, it stopped working and left my brother with his girlfriend stranded in the middle of the lake. After towing it back to the dock, my father resolved to find out why the jet ski wouldn't run after just having it repaired.
The next morning, he went down to the water while the rest of the family was putting on swimsuits and sunscreen. Unfortunately, my mother was the only person who knew that he left the house to try to see if the jet ski would start again. All of the sudden, we hear a loud blast-so loud it rattled the windows of the house. From the front windows we saw unknown shrapnel raining from the sky into the water. When I stepped outside to look at the source of the blast, I see a small boat on fire. Our bewilderment turned to horror when we realized the small boat was what was left of my father's newly repaired jet ski. As my sister, my husband and I raced down to the water, screaming for my father the entire way down, we searched the water for him only to find his shell-shocked, lifeless body floating in the water. The jet ski had exploded, and, thankfully, thrown him from the wreckage. Once he was taken to the hospital, doctors determined the explosion had fractured three ribs, broken his back, shattered his ankle and tore his aorta. Because of the tear in his aorta, his physicians were afraid he might hemorrhage and die. He was then stabilized and Care-Flighted to a “trauma I” hospital to treat him for his extensive injuries.

Like so many other hard working Americans right now, my parents have insurance but, it isn't great. The medical bills from the helicopter ride, the surgeries and the care he is receiving during his hospital stay will put them in debt and may deplete any retirement savings they have. As he is a realtor, his income is based upon his ability to show houses to interested buyers. Due to his injuries, he will have very limited mobility for some undetermined amount of time. He will be out of work for an estimated 3-4 months while he is bedridden and resigned to his wheelchair. Our family would appreciate any donation to their medical expenses to relieve some of the stress that these bills may cause as my parents work on his rehabilitation and healing. He has a long road to recovery ahead of him. Every little bit of help counts!
