Hi, my name is Sherene and I work at Mount Sinai Hospital where i met my co-worker Ana. She is such an amazing person, friend, mom, sister, & daughter. She’s a medical assistant at our ambulatory surgery department. She’s a single mom of 2 beautiful kids. Her son Denzel is 13 and her daughter Alana is 11. She’s been struggling for over a year with her finances and now with her daughter being diagnosed with cancer it’s even harder. They found the tumor because she has been vomiting since last year, getting worse often, pediatrician were looking for the problem in her belly without success. The GI specialist sent her to do a CT Scan june 28th in her brain, the 29th they did the scan and called her mom to come back and admitted her in the emergency room because they find out she has a mass in the cerebellum. They did the surgery on July 1st, sent the tumor to pathology, results came back as a malignant tumor (medulloblastoma) also with another MRI they find out she has metastasis in the medulla. She is currently taking physical, occupational, and speech therapy for ten days, then they have to go back to start the chemo and radiotherapy. The tumor was sent for genetics studies and to find out what kind of medulloblastoma is it. Would take several weeks, their still waiting for the results. The proton radiotherapy will start at the beginning of August, and will be for 6 weeks so far. Chemotherapy will start the same week as radiotherapy for 7 months. This treatment could be changed when the results from genetics come back. Some medulloblastomas are more aggressive than others. The oncologist will modify the treatment to more aggressive if is necessary. Filing for FMLA to be able to stay with her daughter during this journey because the father for Alana is currently in Puerto Rico. He came up to be with his daughter but had to go back home and he took his son Denzel with him so that Ana can focus on Alana.
