An Awesome Tribute for Al

Alain Lucas, fondly known as “Al,” was an island treasure.

On a magical island full of unique personalities, Al was widely recognized and universally loved. When you saw the rare oversized lumber truck rattling down dirt roads, and braking through 5 corners, you knew Al was driving. He always honked if he saw you waving. And he’d always say “hello,” and take the time to exchange words of good cheer, whenever you might encounter him in Oak Bluffs, or any other Vineyard place. He was mostly quiet and soft spoken, except for when he laughed. Al could laugh. He had a good laugh! He had a laugh that shook up the room he was in. Kind of like his bass playing. Al was a study in dichotomy: a gentle giant, but immensely strong and physically powerful; a man of many acquaintances, but fiercely loyal to those in his inner circle; a manly man in everyday work clothes who loved to cook; and cook and bake he could! Al loved super heroes. When you saw Al heavy lifting all that lumber, you thought he might be one. Al was always willing to help out and lend a helping hand to anybody that asked. That made him one of our island super heroes. Al loved music more than anything else. Raised on music, Al lived by an innate musical creed that we all marveled at. He played bass guitar in many island bands over several decades. If there was music, Al was there. Al had a wonderful smile, and he thought so many things were “awesome,” that it made those around him feel better about their own lives. His positivity radiated outward and he refused to let people worry about him. But now is the time to show Al we did worry about him, and we want him to have this permanent marker, as our testimony of recognition to his contribution to island life and culture.
