Support Our Superhero Boys, Archie & Jensen
Our world was turned upside down when our sons, Archie and Jensen, were diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in 2015. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive muscle disease which effects all muscles in the body, including the heart and muscles used for breathing. Most boys effected lose their ability to walk by their early teens. DMD is 100% fatal with a drastically shortened life expectancy. There is currently no cure.
After the boys’ were diagnosed, our lives changed in an instant and our future outlook was completely different. It was a very difficult time for us as we adjusted to our new “normal” life full of stress, anxiety and grief. This diagnosis had also been a very tough time for Archie and Jensen’s older sister, Rhylea.
The daily challenges that our boys endure are countless and they are a true source of inspiration for all who meet them. As the boys grow older, their needs are increasing. Archie, 13, now uses a power wheelchair at school and uses a manual wheelchair to access the community as he struggles to walk long distances. Jensen, 8, has just received his first manual wheelchair as he struggles to walk long distances. As he gets older, Jensen will eventually need a power wheelchair too. We are very fortunate to receive NDIS funding for these very expensive items that the boys are now requiring.
Unfortunately, NDIS does not cover the purchase of wheelchair accessible vehicles and our current vehicle only carries one wheelchair at atime. This is putting a lot of strain on our ability to do activities as a family.
Since the boys’ diagnosis, Jacqui (Archie and Jensen’s mum) has been unable to return to fill time work, which makes life very difficult financially. Our Superhero Boys Inc. charity was started to help relieve some of the financial stress. Over the years, the charity has raised moneyfor things like air conditioning to keep they boys’ comfortable in the hot North Qld summers,an awning for the house so the boys’ can access their house out of the weather and many other items that the family has had to purchase to increase the boys’ quality of life.
This unrelenting disease has already taken so much away from our family but we do our best to keep going every day and try to help the boys enjoy their lives as much as possible.
