On Sunday, October 4th, my niece Marissa Naggs was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident on the south end of Ottawa and transported from the scene by helicopter to St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford and from there flown to Luries Childrens Hospital in Chicago. Upon impact, her right leg was fractured at the tibia and fibula. Her pelvis was broken in three different places requiring 10+ hours of surgery in which the doctors were able to use rods and screws to repair her right leg and it took them four plates and 19 screws to help put her pelvis back together. She was released after 9 days and will start impatient rehabilitation at the Shirley Ryan Rehabilitation Center in Chicago once she can put weight on her legs.
Until then, Marissa will have a long and difficult rehabilitation process before she can return to being a normal 14-year-old freshman at Ottawa Township High School. As a bright note during this difficult time, Marissa may have found her calling in nursing, as she's found a new respect and appreciation for the nurses that have cared for her from the beginning of this ordeal. I ask that we please come together as a community to help Marissa on her long journey ahead and support the Naggs family with any and all assistance as they work to get their daughter back to whole again.
