Akmal's College Tuition Fund

Hi, my name is Akmal Muminov and I am about to start my final year at Adelphi University as an undergraduate international student majoring in Computer Science with a 3.91 GPA. I have been on the Dean’s List every semester at Adelphi University.

Since my school years, I dreamed about America because I liked its culture, and studying in the country of my dreams was a way for me to explore the country I adored from my childhood.

With a dream to study at university and to get to know the American culture, in the Fall of 2017, I came to the US to get my bachelor's. I struggled with the language, I was homesick, and it was difficult for me to adapt to a different milieu, however, I made it through these obstacles because I wanted to study here. During my stay, I have since gained a lot of experience and consciousness, and my values and outlook have changed significantly in the last three years. I truly began appreciating people I have because I was alone during my journey. My loved ones are back home in Uzbekistan and I miss them all the time.

I believe that all challenges people face temper them in some way. Today, I am in a situation where I face hardship and I think it is another lesson that will harden my mind and character.

I need some outside help to continue my education, my last year before graduation. This unexpected pandemic came like a wrecking ball and completely altered my plans. My parents are my main source of funding and due to a total lockdown of my country, they stopped working for an indefinite period. Thus, they cannot finance my tuition expenses now, as they used to prior to this pandemic. I have been working part-time during my sophomore and junior years to help my parents pay for my college, however, now money from my part-time job is not enough to cover my living expenses and tuition. Being an international student also means I am limited to work and cannot work full-time and that worsens the situation. I found that there is an Economic Hardship program which can grant me a work authorization that would allow me to work more hours. However, the application for this program doesn’t guarantee that I would get permission to work fulltime off-campus. I applied for the program in late May, and now it is a waiting game that takes 3 months for Immigration Services to grant me a work permit.

At the moment, I am working remotely on-campus for the university’s IT Help Desk. I am allowed to work 27 hours allowed, but it barely helps me cover my living expenses (rent and food).

I have a strong desire to graduate, and the current circumstances are jeopardizing my dreams. I want to graduate and use my degree to find a job that will help me become a person who can help my family in financial and moral ways because they are the people I love the most.

I found out about this platform two days ago, and I hope that it would benefit me. I am aiming for $15,000 to help pay for my tuition which is $25,000. My school starts in late August, but the first payment should be made by the 10th of August. I will keep on working to shorten the gap. I would appreciate it if you can help me in any way in taking the final step towards earning my degree.

Thank you,

Akmal
