Sou o Rodrigo Cardoso e estou a fazer esta angariação de fundos para conseguir frequentar o Joint Master in Journalism and International Affairs (Mestrado Conjunto em Jornalismo e Relações Internacionais) da Sciences Po Paris, a terceira melhor universidade do mundo na área, e tornar esta oportunidade financeiramente viável.

Durante muito tempo, acreditei que, se trabalhasse o suficiente, nada me poderia travar. Com o tempo, porém, fui percebendo que a realidade nem sempre funciona de forma tão linear.

Há momentos em que o que separa alguém da oportunidade seguinte não é a falta de capacidade, de mérito ou de ambição, mas simplesmente a falta de recursos financeiros para conseguir dar esse passo. Cheguei até aqui com muito esforço, mas vejo-me agora perante a possibilidade de perder esta oportunidade, não por não estar à altura dela, mas por não ter os meios para a tornar viável.

Quem sou

Cresci na Buraca, fui criado pela minha mãe e cresci com três irmãos mais novos num contexto de poucos recursos. Desde cedo, tenho procurado superar, passo a passo, as limitações desse ponto de partida. Terminei o ensino secundário com média de 19 valores, o que me permitiu obter uma bolsa de mérito da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, e estou atualmente a concluir a minha licenciatura em Ciência Política e Relações Internacionais na NOVA FCSH, com média de 17 valores.

Movido pela convicção de que é possível construir um futuro melhor do que o presente que tantas vezes nos é imposto, tenho assumido várias responsabilidades no campo do voluntariado e da participação cívica. Para além de integrar a Direção da Amnistia Internacional Portugal, fui selecionado pelo Movimento, a nível global, para integrar o Global Youth Collective enquanto jovem líder para a região europeia. Fui também membro do Youth Advisory Council do Presidente do Comité Económico e Social Europeu, sou conselheiro da Direção da Agência dos Direitos Fundamentais da União Europeia e, ainda recentemente, falei na ONU a convite da própria organização. Todas estas funções foram desempenhadas de forma não remunerada.

A educação foi, durante muito tempo, o meu refúgio e tem sido, sem sombra de dúvida, a minha luz ao fundo do túnel. Talvez seja também por isso que tenho defendido, de forma tão consistente, a educação e o acesso a oportunidades para comunidades marginalizadas.

Porque estou a pedir ajuda

Quando me candidatei à Sciences Po, contava com a bolsa que a universidade atribuía a estudantes europeus durante o primeiro ano de estudos em França, uma vez que só depois desse primeiro ano é possível candidatar-me a uma bolsa universitária do CROUS (Centres Régionaux des Œuvres Universitaires et Scolaires), que, de acordo com o rendimento do meu agregado familiar, cobrirá a totalidade dos meus custos. No entanto, a Sciences Po cancelou essas bolsas destinadas ao primeiro ano e, por isso, a ajuda de que preciso serve apenas para tornar possível esse período inicial em Paris, já que, no segundo ano, poderei candidatar-me à bolsa do CROUS.

Desde o ensino secundário que trabalho para sustentar o meu percurso. Já trabalhei em pizzarias, eventos, museus e noutros trabalhos ocasionais, e continuo ativamente à procura de um part-time que consiga conciliar com o mestrado. Ainda assim, a carga horária do curso é muito exigente e, sem falar francês, torna-se especialmente difícil garantir um trabalho que me permita cobrir sozinho todas as despesas essenciais em Paris.

A meta

Estabeleci os 14.000 euros como meta desta campanha com base na previsão de custos disponibilizada pela própria Sciences Po para viver em Paris, que aponta, em média, para cerca de 750 euros mensais em alojamento, 275 euros em alimentação e 150 euros em despesas correntes. Os fundos angariados serão utilizados para ajudar a cobrir esses custos essenciais e permitir-me começar este mestrado com a estabilidade mínima necessária para o frequentar.

Esta angariação de fundos é, sinceramente, uma das coisas mais vulneráveis que já fiz, e preferia não ter de a fazer. Sempre evitei pedir ajuda. Cheguei até aqui com muitos obstáculos pelo caminho e vários deles fui superando pelos meus próprios meios, com trabalho, persistência e a capacidade de me reinventar quando parecia não haver saída. Mas, desta vez, a barreira é maior do que aquelas que tenho conseguido ultrapassar sozinho.

Hello! My name is Rodrigo Cardoso and I am raising funds to be able to attend the Joint Master’s in Journalism and International Affairs at Sciences Po Paris, the third best university in the world in this field, and to make this opportunity financially viable.

For a long time, I believed that if I worked hard enough, nothing could stop me. Over time, however, I have come to realise that reality does not always work in such a linear way.

There are moments when what separates someone from their next opportunity is not a lack of ability, merit or ambition, but simply a lack of financial means to take that step. I have worked very hard to get here, but I now find myself facing the possibility of losing this opportunity, not because I am not capable, but because I do not have the means to make it viable.

Who I am

I grew up in Buraca, raised by my mother, alongside three younger siblings, in a context of limited resources. From an early age, I have tried to overcome, step by step, the limitations of that starting point. I finished high school with a final grade of 19 out of 20, which allowed me to receive a merit scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and I am currently completing my Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations at NOVA FCSH, with a current average of 17 out of 20.

Driven by the belief that it is possible to build a better future than the present we are often given, I have taken on several responsibilities in volunteering and civic participation. In addition to being part of the Board of Amnesty International Portugal, I was selected by the Movement at a global level to join the Global Youth Collective as a young leader for the European region. I was also a member of the Youth Advisory Council to the President of the European Economic and Social Committee, I am an advisor to the Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, and, more recently, I spoke at the United Nations at the organisation’s invitation. All of these roles were carried out on an unpaid basis.

Education was, for a long time, my refuge and has been, without a doubt, my light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe that is also why, throughout this path, I have consistently defended education and access to opportunities for marginalized communities.

Why I am asking for help

When I applied to Sciences Po, I was counting on the scholarship that the university used to provide to European students during the first year of studies in France, since it is only after that first year that it becomes possible to apply for a CROUS university scholarship (Centres Régionaux des Œuvres Universitaires et Scolaires), which, according to my household income, will cover all my costs. However, Sciences Po cancelled these first-year scholarships and, because of that, the help I am asking for is only to make this initial period in Paris possible, since, in the second year, I will be able to apply for the CROUS scholarship.

Since high school, I have worked to support my path. I have worked in restaurants, events, museums and other occasional jobs, and I continue to actively look for a part-time job that I can combine with the Master’s. Even so, the workload of the course is very demanding and, without speaking French, it becomes especially difficult to secure a job that allows me to cover all essential expenses in Paris on my own.

The goal

I set €14,000 as the goal for this campaign based on the cost estimates provided by Sciences Po for living in Paris, which point, on average, to around €750 per month for housing, €275 for food and €150 for daily expenses. The funds raised will be used to help cover these essential costs and allow me to start this Master’s with the minimum stability needed to complete it.

This fundraising effort is, honestly, one of the most vulnerable things I have ever done, and I would rather not have to do it. I have always avoided asking for help. I have come this far facing many obstacles, and I have overcome many of them on my own, through hard work, persistence and the ability to adapt when it felt like there was no way out. But this time, the barrier is greater than those I have been able to overcome alone.
