This isn't the story of an ordinary house — it's the story of an old water mill hidden in the woods of Liguria. A place that remained abandoned for decades.
A place that, against all logic, survived time, the weather, and several floods.
A place I was lucky enough to find, and foolish enough to buy. When I first saw it, it was already half swallowed by nature. Many would have seen only a ruin.
I saw something different.
I saw a place capable of slowing down time.
A place where the sound of the stream's water accompanied every day.
A place where, many years after I bought it, children could still spend hours inventing, building, exploring, and simply being children — fully immersed in exploration, free from the pressures of so-called normal life.
Over the years the mill became a kind of refuge. For me. For my children. For friends and families who spent days and moments there that they still remember fondly today.
It wasn't a perfect place — far from it. It still lacked much of the infrastructure it needed, and for various reasons many projects had been left unfinished.
Many dreams still to be realized.
And yet it was alive. Deeply alive, in its own exemplary magnificence.
Then, at the end of May 2026, the fire came.
A short circuit sparked a blaze that devastated the building. In a matter of hours, the mill was gutted.
Much of the interior structure was lost.
When I went back, I found a scene that's hard to describe: collapsed beams, rubble, the smell of smoke.
Silence — the kind of silence that follows a loss.
And yet something held on: the load-bearing walls, part of the ancient mechanism.
Structures that for decades had withstood rain, floods, and neglect, as if the mill were still fighting to stay standing.
But today the danger isn't over — if anything, the situation is urgent. The roof is gone, the structure is exposed to the elements, and the historic walls are made of stone and earth.
If we can't protect them quickly, next autumn's rains could cause irreversible damage, or even the collapse of major parts of the building.
That's why we've decided to ask for help.
Not for a full reconstruction — that will come if we find a way.
First, to save what has survived.

The funds raised will go toward:

building a temporary roof over the mill;
securing the collapsed sections;
protecting the historic walls from water;
preventing further collapse;
preserving what remains of the building until future reconstruction is possible.

This is the first battle.
The most important one.
Because without this phase, there will be no future to build.
I take my share of responsibility — I wasn't the caretaker this place deserved, and I gave too little care to somewhere so magical.
But today I want to do everything I can to prevent its final loss. If we manage to save it, the next step will be giving it life again — turning it once more into a home, a place where people can come together.
In recent years we had also begun a small experimental project offering tent stays immersed in nature. A simple experience, but one capable of sparking real enthusiasm and involvement in those who chose to try it. The people who passed through here understood the spirit of the place: slow down, breathe, rediscover an authentic relationship with nature and with time.

The goal of the future restoration isn't just to recover a building, but to create a place designed with children in mind too. In these woods I watched my own children spend entire days inventing games, building huts, watching animals, following the stream, learning about the world through curiosity and freedom. Here I experienced firsthand how much a natural environment can become an extraordinary space for growth, creativity, and self-expression.
The dream is to create a place that can offer this same opportunity to other children and their families.
On the surrounding land, keeping a respectful distance from the house and fully respecting the environment, we would also like to build a small cluster of treehouses — simple and lightweight — for families and individuals seeking an authentic experience of immersion in nature. Not a tourist resort, but an intimate, quiet place that respects the forest, where a stay becomes a chance to slow down, observe, create, and fully live a timeless, low-tech way of being — an invitation to switch off screens and settle into a moment of closeness with yourself and your loved ones.
A place where other families and other children can experience that connection with nature, silence, and slow time that seems to have become so rare today.
But that future depends on what we can do right now.
Every contribution, large or small, will be real, concrete help.
And even simply sharing this campaign can make a difference.
A symbolic and artistic way of saying thank you: A Helping Hand for the Mill.
Anyone who contributes to this fundraiser can, if they'd like, leave a permanent mark on this place.
I'll simply ask you to place your hand on a sheet of paper, trace its outline, and send it to me. Nothing more.

Once the roof is rebuilt permanently, during the second phase of the full restoration, those outlines will be hand-painted onto the wooden boards of the ceiling inside. Hundreds of different hands, large and small, from far-off places, side by side.
They'll be the visible story of everyone who chose to lend a hand so this place could go on living.
Every time someone looks up, they'll see a roof symbolically held up by the people who believed in this project.
There will also be a plaque bearing the names of all the donors.
One day I'll be able to tell my children, and anyone who walks into this house:
"This roof, and this house, weren't built with wood alone. They were built with the help of hundreds of people."
To me, this will be the most beautiful way to thank everyone who chose to be part of this story — with a visible presence that will remain forever.
Because sometimes all it takes is one hand to change the fate of a story.
On behalf of myself and my children, thank you for taking a few minutes to read our story.
Thank you for any help you're willing to offer us.
And thank you, above all, for helping us give this place — this place of the soul — a chance.

Per me.
I fondi raccolti serviranno a:
realizzare una copertura temporanea del mulino;
mettere in sicurezza le parti collassate;
proteggere i muri storici dall'acqua;
evitare ulteriori crolli;
