Dear friends, family and those of who we have not yet met,
Our mother Dorothy Leonard 78, has been diagnosed with terminal colo-rectal cancer. Since the diagnosis at the end of March, she has been largely alone in Winnipeg, Manitoba far from home. We are asking for assistance to help with the costs for an air ambulance to bring her home to Toronto. Our mother needs our help to be closer to family and in the care of her loved ones and those who love her. She is feeling very much alone and helpless, and doing her best to keep her chin up as the edema is rapidly over taking her whole body. She has stents in her kidneys and rectum to allow drainage, and we fear she does not have long for this earth. We are grateful for many things, as her illness, has brought her children, who have been scattered over the globed, and extended family together in an effort to bring her peace and a feeling of wholeness. Last week we attempted to fly her the 2000 miles to Toronto, Ontario to be with Rebecca and her partner Neal. They have made a very comfortable bed for her in their studio apartment with all of the things she loves, flowers, music, friends, family, movies and a even had an adjustable single bed donated to them.
Unfortunately, the airlines turned her away, because she did not have a referral letter from the doctor allowing her to fly! With the time delays caused by a bacterial infection, she is now unable to fly on a regular airline or travel by car due to her fragile condition and must be flown by air ambulance with the assistance of a nurse. Current estimates to fly her are in the range of $30,000! This is a substantial amount of money for any one person and we are currently planning to pay it on a high interest credit card. We had hoped that the medical insurance normally provided with a teaching position would cover this but the community she was working in has had challenges and did not manage to keep up the payments to the company - so the medical insurance for their teachers is currently suspended.
For all who know our mother, she is a strong and remarkable woman, who raised her 4 children (Rebecca, Victor, Emanuel and Jeremiah) as a single mother and has instilled us with humanity and good values that have guided us in our lives. She has made her life one of service, dedicating it to teaching First Nations children in Northern Canada. One of her greatest gifts is her ability to stay positive in even the darkest of moments. With the support of community, we are hopeful that we can raise the money to help our mother with this cost. If you are able to help with a donation to help us reach our goals we would very much appreciate it.
Yours sincerely, Rebecca, Victor, Emanuel and Jeremiah
