Air Accessibility YYC is a initiative project passionate about advocating and providing access for all members of the community by cleaning the air with HEPA grade filtration, an often overlooked , yet critical aspect of access and inclusion. We do this through our community funded "air purifier library." HEPA grade air purifiers can be borrowed and returned for events and gatherings.

We aim to bridge the awareness and cost of resources required to clean the air in any community and group setting, but with a extra passion to integrate clean air into the arts community for a more inclusive arts scene.

We also will focus on providing help to vulnerable community members during wildfire season.

We are strong advocates for fragrance free environments which air purification can help provide. We understand the need for this, and will have strictly fragrance free air filtrations reserved for these individuals and situations, but request all who borrow to adhere to our fragrance free access policy as best as possible.

We hope to expand our service to eventually provide masks, sanitizer and other advocacy tools to help expand our access goals and mission.

Our founder is Mieke Maligne, a musician, poet, sewist, and disability advocate. Mieke graduated with a bachelors of popular and Jazz Music in 2015, and taught voice, guitar and ukulele post graduation after opening her own studio M&M music.

Mieke released two albums, "Just the Sun" 2011, and "Mosaic" in 2014. Both received air play and placed on the local charts, and Just the Sun won Jazz Album of the year at the Edmonton Music Awards and Mosaic was nominated for R&B album of the year.

Mieke's desire to connect with people and community was fostered in these years. Around 2017 Mieke's previous health problems developed and extended into significant and severe disability and chronic illness. Being immunodeficient was an additional barrier, along with anaphylaxis to many triggers like fragrance, alongside more traditional access needs regarding mobility. During this time Mieke wrote about access and Disability in her poetry on the account @healingscript.

First hand Mieke saw and felt the exclusion and barriers that boxed her out from her previous communities while trying to navigate life in a whole new way. Even in aware and accessible spaces very often these accessibility needs are unconsidered, and lot of this project and knowledge is in part from our personal experience in finding ways for Mieke's husband Matt to gig and being in these spaces as a person of close exposure. We learned it is possible to make change and make these spaces more inclusive. Mieke wants to make real and tangible change and knows they are many others like her who should have access to the arts in a safe way either again or for the first time for the rest of their lives.
