Aiding a disabled flood victim: Darryl Murphy

To those that don’t know me… My name is Deja Murphy. To really know me is to know I do not play about my family, and I will do whatever and give whatever to make sure they are okay!

My dad is a victim of the flooding that has taken place here in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. I want to give you all a brief back-story. This year has not been easy for my dad at all. I went and got him in February from Louisville, where he and his ex-wife resided. He was forced to leave due to them getting a divorce, knowing his conditions. I had to make extra accommodations for my dad when I got him moved in, because he is disabled due to having a bad stroke years ago, on top of the medical problems he already has.

On April 4th, my dad’s street was flooded to the point I had to get the fire department to go retrieve my dad. They successfully did so on a small boat. Later that day, my sister-in-law and her brother took a kayak down his street and into his home to retrieve the little that they could! He pretty much lost everything from food, furniture, TVs, medicine, medical equipment, clothes, and plenty more…

With God’s will, I have been able to put him in a hotel until we are able to get him rehoused. For those who are wondering, I have called the 211 hotline number. I have spoken to the Red Cross and they have put in an application for him to get assistance and flood relief. For those who are even wondering why we didn’t get flood insurance due to him being so close to Little River, we were told that it never floods there and hasn’t since the landlord has owned the home. And we later found out this was not the truth. If we would’ve known, we would have been prepared!
