On June 15th, 2015, just after his high school graduation, Adam Gallagher was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of leukemia. Leukemia is a blood cancer that typically attacks one of two types of cells, but his is attacking both types at once. This is so uncommon that only four cases (including Adam) have been diagnosed worldwide. He and his parents have had to relocate from their home in Lakewood to Seattle, where Adam is receiving top-notch care from the experienced doctors at Seattle Children's Hospital.
After months of aggressive treatment including full-body radiation and a bone marrow transplant, Adam was declared leukemia free! He received this wonderful news shortly after Christmas, and he and his family are overjoyed by this miracle.
Adam has made some amazing progress, but still has a long way to go. He is currently battling Graft Versus Host Disease (which means the stem cells from his bone marrow transplant are attacking his body) and is experiencing a number of painful and exhausting symptoms. He's had to have multiple procedures to drain fluid that keeps accumulating around his heart, and rarely has the energy to even get out of bed.
Throughout every moment of this ordeal, Adam's loving parents have stayed right by his side. They have had to stop working in order to relocate to Seattle and provide Adam with the constant care and support he needs. All of their vacation and sick leave hours were used up during Adam's first hospitalization over the summer, so they desperately need donations to cover the mounting medical and living expenses.
Thank you all for taking the time to read and share Adam's story. The support of friends, family, and the community have made the most difficult time in the Gallaghers' lives so much easier to bear. Prayers and positive thoughts are very much appreciated, and donations even more so.
