Gianni: Brain tumor warrior

Cher.e.s ami.e.s de Gianni (Gigi) Mariani et de sa famille,

Mes amies très proches ont perdu leur enfant, Momo, à l’âge de 6 ans des suites d’une tumeur du cerveau. Durant cette période bouleversante, elles ont tout fait pour que leur fille profite de la vie et guérissent. La famille a voyagé et pleinement savouré ses derniers mois.

 

Maintenant, c’est au tour de Gianni de traverser cette épreuve.
Sa tumeur était la taille d’une balle-molle.

« Bonjour, je m’appelle Gigi et j’ai six ans. Maman m’a dit qu’ils ont trouvé une boule dans ma tête, je pense qu’elle était très grosse parce que maman m’a parlé des enfants malades comme grand-papa qui vont au ciel. » - Gigi

« Nous nous dirigions en Ontario puis dans l'Ouest en espérant trouver un médecin prêt à traiter Gigi. Puis, par miracle, un médecin de Montréal a enfin autorisé un scan de sa tête révélant la tumeur et l’urgence d’opérer. En novembre dernier, les médecins ont mis quinze heures à la retirer. » - Cynthia et Caroline

Miracle, son opération a été un succès.
 
Mais. 
Oui, il y a un « Mais »…
 

Nous ne savons pas quel sera le sort de Gigi.
La masse reviendra-t-elle ? Les tumeurs du cerveau offrent rarement un pronostic prometteur.
 

Je reconnais dans les yeux des parents de Gigi cet élan d’amour qui fera tout pour sauver son enfant. Elles ont dépensé une fortune en hôtels, déplacements, repas durant ses innombrables rendez-vous médicaux à l’hôpital ainsi que pour son opération. Sans compter les traitements alternatifs pour s’assurer que Gigi aille mieux....

Bien sûr, on ne compte pas, dans ces moments.

Surtout quand il s’agit d’une question de vie ou de mort.

Surtout quand il s’agit de notre enfant.

 

« On a tout donné, on s’est vidé émotionnellement, physiquement et financièrement. Il est vivant… et on essaie de faire parler plus fort notre cœur qui veut nous faire croire qu’on y est pour quelque chose. » - Cynthia et Caroline

 

La partie est loin d’être terminée… Gianni doit continuer à recevoir des soins. Mais l’accès est limité et insuffisant pour sa réhabilitation. Déménagement impromptu dans un lieu où il peut avoir des soins appropriés : la Floride.

 

« On ne veut pas refaire la même erreur, et donc nous venons de nous diriger à l’extérieur du pays afin d’obtenir des soins et lui fournir un environnement de réhabilitation adéquat sur une base quotidienne. » - Cynthia et Caroline

 

« J’ai entendu mes parents dire à grand-maman qu’ils n’ont pas aimé que je tombe encore dans les escaliers*. Ils ont tout mis dans la voiture pendant qu’on faisait dodo et nous ont amenés à l’été avec une piscine.  Maman me dit que c’est pour que j’aille mieux qu’on est ici. » - Gigi

~ Help Gigi recover from a brain tumour ~

 Dear friends of Gigi Mariani and her parents,

 

 I am appealing to you today to help the parents of Gianni (Gigi) to help him.

 

 My very close friends lost their child, Momo, at the age of 6 to a brain tumour. During this devastating period, they tried everything to help her. They did all the treatments to confort and ease her pain. They traveled, enjoyed Life and celebrated.

 

Now it’s Gianni’s turn now. His tumour is the size of a softball.

 

 “Hello, my name is Gigi and I am six years old.

Mom told me that they found a ball in my head, I think it was very big because mom told me about sick children like grandpa who go to heaven. I told mom that I didn't want to go to heaven, mom told me that this time the doctors wanted to help me and to trust them, she told me that she would stay behind the door while I would sleep and she wouldn't move. I believe her, mom always tells me she's there, even if I don't see her.“ - Gigi

 

 “We were hoping to find a treating doctor in Ontario or the West coast. Miraculously, a Montreal doctor finally authorized a scan of his head that revealed the tumour and the urgency to operating. In November, doctors took 15 hours to perform an emergency surgery.“ - Cynthia and Caroline

 

 Miracle, the operation was a success.

 

 But.

 Yes, there is a “But”…

Gigi’s fate is unknown. Will the mass return? Brain tumours rarely offer a happy outcome.

 

 This is why I recognize in the eyes of his parents this outpouring of love that will do anything to save their child.

 

Gigi's parents spent a fortune on hotels, travel, meals during her countless hospital appointments as well as for his surgery. Not to mention alternative treatments to make sure Gigi gets better.

 

 “We temporarily moved to Montreal to prioritize his care 100% and then traveled 1 to 3 times a week to Montreal for care and examinations. - Cynthia and Caroline

 

Who on earth goes on a budget during trying times? Especially when it’s a life or death matter Especially when it pertains the future of a child.

 

 “We gave everything, we emptied ourselves emotionally, physically and financially. That's all we have to ease our feeling of guilt. He is alive... and we try to make our hearts speak louder, which wants us to believe that we have something to do with it. - Cynthia and Caroline

 

 The game is far from over… Gianni needs to heal. Access to care is limited and insufficient for his rehabilitation. His family does everything to look after him. Impromptu move to a place where he can get proper care: Florida.

 

 "We don't want to make the same mistake again, so we just headed outside the country to get care and provide him with an adequate rehabilitation environment on a daily basis. - Cynthia and Caroline

 

 "I overheard my parents telling Grandma that they didn't like me falling down the stairs again. They put everything in the car while we slept and brought us to the summer with a swimming pool. We were happy! Mom tells me it's to make me feel better that we're here. -Gigi
