Emile and his mother will need financial support to help them with expenses related to the treatments he needs (hospitalization, travel to major centers, medication bills, accommodation, fertility, etc.)
Here is his story:
Emile is 19 years old and lives in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean (Québec Canada) with his mother. Ever since he was very young, he has been very athletic; he plays hockey, rides a fat bike, is always outside moving. For a little over a year, he has had back pain that prevents him from continuing his favorite activities. He has breathing difficulties and chest pressure: he is prescribed pumps. Time passes and nothing improves. After several months, Emile finally had a scan.
On February 21, he and his mother go to the chicoutimi hospital to meet the specialist who will evaluate the results of the scan. That's when everything starts to tumble: you can see a ton of masses in his abdomen. He will be hospitalized the same day. The next morning he was told that he had to undergo an exploratory and extensive operation: the surgeons tried to remove as many tumors as possible by going through his neck only. They manage to remove only a few tumors, to send them to the laboratory and determine the type of cancer.
On February 26, Emile and his two parents meet the doctor. The official diagnosis : Advanced and aggressive Hodgkin's cancer that progresses very quickly. Chemotherapy should be started as soon as possible. He is also told that his chances of having children after his treatments are practically nil. So we suggest he go into fertility to give him a chance to have children one day. However, all of this (treatments, hospitalization, medication, travel, fertility, etc.) comes at a cost.
Emile is only 19 years old, he was taking a course to become a truck driver and he lives with his mother. She had to make the decision to reduce her working hours a lot in order to be there for Emile. Unsurprisingly, a decision like this doesn't change the fact that the bills need to be paid.
The purpose of this fundraiser is therefore to give Emile and his mother a chance to deal with cancer without the financial stress. The $50,000 will therefore be used to pay for everything related to expenses during chemotherapy: the many hospitalizations to come, paying for the hospital room, medication, travel to major centers outside the region. (Quebec, Montreal, wich is about 125 and 300 miles away), the fertility program, and all other expenses related to the disease.
Although Emile was asked what his dearest wish would be, his humble answer was "I wish I could attend a Montreal Canadiens hockey game, but I especially want it to help pay the bills while I fight and get back to my life where I was". So fundraising would also be used for that: to help him get back to his life where he put it on hold.
Emile still decides to continue his course during his treatments, which he will finish in April. He still wants to work a little, because continuing to see people a little and keep busy changes idieas from cancer.
Despite all this, Emile keeps his head held high and he remains strong. He still has a big smile and keeps his sense of humor. Help us make this difficult time in his life easier.
