Dear Supporters,
My name is Birute and I am a mother to a gorgeous boy Aidas.
In January 2023 I gave birth to our boy, and our family was complete.

On the evening of the 3rd of May, we took our son, to A&E as he was very unwell with a bad cold and cough. They ran some blood tests and found some abnormal results, which could not be fully explained. It was thought that the infection was the most likely reason for the abnormal results, but it was at this stage the doctors first said that it could also be an oncological problem.

Unfortunately, it was confirmed.

He was diagnosed with a very rare aggressive adrenal gland cancer which only occurs in an average of a couple of children in the UK. Aida's cancer is further complicated because he has a genetic mutation, TP53, that interferes with his ability to suppress tumor growth. The mutation causes Li-Fraumeni Syndrome which predisposes him to additional cancers throughout his lifetime and he will need regular testing to identify future cancers early.

This all too young, incredibly brave child is only entering the first stage of what could be a lifelong battle with cancer, or the threat of cancer, due to his increased risk for a wide spectrum of tumors.

Aidas moved to the intensive care unit and then on to Evelina Children's Hospital in London. From that moment our lives changed completely. I cannot explain in words how I felt; my heart broke.

He already endured several chemotherapy and a G-tube for delivery of medication and nutrition directly into his stomach. He also gets four daily doses of mitotane and nutrition through the G-tube. Mitotane will destroy his adrenal glands so he will require hormone replacement for the rest of his life. While in the hospital he gets chemotherapy that is ototoxic (toxic to the ears) which means he possibly will lose some of his hearing and will require hearing aids in the future. But if he can tolerate the chemotherapy, he has an excellent chance of survival according to his oncologist.

He has gone through numerous check-ups and is on medication. He has ongoing respiratory infections, but worse than that, his heart could stop at any moment. However, UK health care is very limited about adrenal gland cancer it being so rare.

We decided to send his diagnosis to other hospitals. Boston Children's Hospital responded to us. This gave me hope that there was something more that could be done. From that day I started searching for info and I have since found that the surgery which could be performed at that hospital is his best chance for a long and full life.
The cost of this operation is £60k-£65k.
