On 5/21/18, Aidan Blundell was diagnosed with leukemia. He started treatment immediately but his road to recovery is going to be long and arduous. The doctors feel this fight could last up to 10 months--or possibly longer. We all know Aidan is fiercely competitive and he'll do everything in his power to combat this illness.
His parents, Brian and Mindy are holding steadfast at his side using the limited sick and vacation time they have from their jobs. This journey is not going to be easy. There is always a financial burden that comes with these unexpected turns in life.
Those of us that know Brian and Mindy, know how hard they’ve always worked to take care of their family. Their care and generosity have even extended beyond their immediate family. Now we have an opportunity to offer them OUR support. We're not exactly sure what the year ahead will look like, but we hope to alleviate some of the financial stress that will inevitably come.
Any help is greatly and graciously appreciated!
A little more of the story...
In April, Aidan began experiencing pain in his knees, which his doctor originally thought to be growing pains. Despite the pain, he continued to play level-one basketball at high level! However, the pain did not subside, it grew worse, and soon he began having lower back pain as well. He also noticed bumps on his scalp and pain in his mouth that his dentist could not diagnose. On May 21, the pain became too much, even affecting his mobility, and Aidan was taken to the emergency room. A scan revealed a mass on his spine and he was immediately scheduled for surgery to remove it. It was during this time that the Leukemia was diagnosed and Aidan has been in the hospital ever since.
As Aidan has been recovering from his back surgery, his doctors worked to determine his treatment plan. After a couple of days, the plan was formed and Aidan had another surgery to have a port catheter placed in his chest. This is the tube through which he will receive his chemotherapy and any blood draws that need to be done. The treatment plan is aggressive and is initially expected to take 6-10 months. During this time, he will require weekly visits to the hospital, including spending one full week in the hospital each month.
This is where we find ourselves now. We want nothing more than to see Aidan and his parents walk this path to a full recovery, but we know they can't do it alone. Our hearts ache for them and we now have an opportunity to give back the love and generosity of this amazing family!
Our goal of 25,000 is our best guess, so far, to cover the costs. This includes 10 months worth of deductibles, supplies needed to take care of Aidan when he returns home, and the cost of a new dryer.
When Aidan returns home, he'll need his environment as bacteria free as possible. His sheets will need to be washed daily and this is why a new dryer is so important as air-drying will not suffice. Brian and Mindy will also need to take his blood and keep the port catheter in his chest sanitized, as well as, ensuring any other medical equipment is kept clean. This will require supplies including gloves and cleaning materials.
Thank you for your support.
I'll continue to update this with any new information I receive.
