My name is Julia Nielsen, and I am the proud grandmother of little Valerie Nielsen. Valerie came into this world 5 weeks early, and right now she is fighting bravely in the NICU. Her sweet lungs still need extra support, and doctors expect she’ll need supplemental oxygen but may be able to go home on Sunday.

Her mother, my daughter-in-law Krissy, endured a terrifying emergency. She was rushed to the hospital with placenta previa—a life-threatening complication—and underwent surgery and a blood transfusion. By the grace of God, both she and Valerie survived.

But the road ahead is not easy. My son Aj and Krissy have two other young daughters at home, and with both parents unable to work, the weight of medical bills and daily expenses is overwhelming. Krissy herself will remain hospitalized for several more days to continue her recovery.
