On October 20, 2024, the Silvas family was affected by the flood that happened in Roswell, NM. On this day, record rainfall occurred, resulting in a flash flood of Chaves County. The Silvas family lost their house and two vehicles to water damage in the aftermath of the flood. The day after the flood, we pulled the flooring from the house and cut all the drywall in the house due to every room taking on water. The AC/Heater is not functioning properly. The house is in total disarray and is unlivable now because, without insulation and walls, and lack of a heating unit, we can't move our children back to their home right now. Multiple pieces of furniture and other important and sentimental belongings were destroyed. Additionally, both daily vehicles were completely flooded with engine bays covered by water while parked in front of the house. Our van (which we still owe on) was deemed totaled by the insurance company. Our car only had liability, so we are having to do what we can to fix it (the engine light and airbag light are now on).
The Silvas family consists of six members: Corina Silvas, who just received her master’s degree in social work and recently started a new career opportunity as a family therapist; Victor Silvas, who just left his job as a USPS City Carrier for six years to start a new career in Home Visiting. We are the parents of four beautiful children. Our oldest daughter is currently pregnant with our first grandchild. Our oldest son just finished his soccer season at high school. Our two youngest children are both gifted students in their schools and doing their best to cope with the situation. We are a very close-knit and loving family that is reaching out for help.
We are trying to raise as much money as possible to help with repairs. We had a company at our home to give us an estimate of the damage. They told us it could be anywhere from $35,000 or more to get our home to where it needs to be, and this is just the walls and the flooring. That estimate did not include the items, furniture, or our AC/Heating system we lost during this event in our lives. We are doing our best to stay positive and be appreciative that we all made it out of our house that night and still have each other. If you do not have the means to donate, that is ok, keep our families and the many other families affected by the disaster in your thoughts, prayers, love in your heart, however you feel, or extend positive vibes to others. Thank you for any help and your time and attention in this situation that has affected many of our lives. Anything over our goal will go towards repairs. Our goal will allow us to move back home but that will not fix our house entirely.
