#MeToo was supposed to mean #TimesUp for all men who abuse their power by sexually harassing and assaulting women. No exceptions. This includes Joe Biden.
This fundraiser is sponsored by Tara's friends and supporters. At her request, the first 50 percent will be donated to NVRDC, a nonprofit that gives survivors of sexual assault physical, emotional and legal services. The rest will go to Tara for safety and security costs, then to her legal costs, then to helping her reclaim her reputation. If more is raised than Tara needs, all will be given to nonprofits supporting sexual assault and domestic violence survivors.
NPR reported that in 1991, Joe Biden used his power to silence several women who were ready to testify about the sexual harassment they saw and experienced working with Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas. Before the hearing, Biden told Thomas, “I respect you. I think you’re a good man, and if these allegations come up, I don’t think they have merit. I will be your biggest defender.”
In 1993, Tara Reade would learn first-hand why Joe was so ready to defend Clarence.
Immediately after Biden violated her, Tara started looking for help. This was before the age of #MeToo, though, and she was met with a wall of silence, and retaliation. After she told her supervisor Marianne Baker that Biden was being inappropriate with her, Ted Kaufman, Biden's chief of staff, took away Taras job supervising the interns, and relegated her to a windowless office until she was ultimately fired.
Over the years she told numerous people, some of whom have come forward, many of whom are afraid to come forward. On Katie Halper, Tara mentioned that her mom had called into Larry King Live to ask what her daughter could do. Weeks later, that tape was discovered . Tara confided in friends at the time, she told family. Years later, when suffering from the still-untreated trauma that Joe Biden imposed on her, she told a neighbor about the rape. This neighbor is a Biden supporter. Years after that, she told a friend and law school classmate .
Tara had no reason to lie to them at the time. She has no reason to lie now. Tara is a lifelong loyal Democrat. She just didn't want her rapist to be president.
