I am Rita. At 67, my husband abandoned me in the hospital in July of 2025. He left me with $7.34, took our car, money, and let our home go into foreclosure.
With friends' help and my $1100 social security check, I have made it this far.
I stayed in a shelter until a friend helped me get a car. I had to choose to pay the shelter $350 a month or pay car insurance. I opted to pay car insurance. In December, I decided to pay car insurance and moved into my car.
I also lost all my clothes, so I have been limited in what type of job I was able to do. I went to work at Walmart doing shopping for online orders. It was more physical than I thought, and I wasn't able to continue. I have had help from friends.
I finally got a job I truly wanted.
I tried to take a loan, and the lender accessed my bank account. I was and still am desperate and gullible. Both my accounts have been accessed, and fraud was perpetrated. They have been closed. My social security check was absorbed to cover overdraft funds. My husband filed for divorce, and I could not get an attorney because I had no money, and pro bono attorneys cannot be found. I found an attorney who has been trying to get me emergency funds.
It took months to get a judge-mandated mediation. My husband would not agree. We had a hearing scheduled for May 22, and it just got pushed to June 29.
I developed bladder issues requiring me to miss work.
Everything I own is in storage, and I am still living in my car. Anything of importance is there. It's all I have left.
I am in need of funds to pay my storage and get temporary housing.
I am grateful for anything you can do to help. I will pay it forward to others who have become homeless like me. I will help women like me that are seniors and homeless. Bless you.
