Help Reshma Clear Urgent Vet Bills to Continue Rescuing Cats

This is a plea to please help me clear my vet bill so that I can continue rescuing and rehoming kittens and cats (sometimes dogs too).

Hi, my name is Reshma. I’m a private animal rescuer based in Nairobi, Kenya, where stray cats roam in large numbers. Sadly, our animal shelters are overwhelmed and cannot accommodate all the cats in need. The most effective way to manage the population is through TNR—Trap, Neuter, and Return—a humane approach that prevents further breeding while allowing the cats to live peacefully in their familiar areas. I have done over 60 TNRs in the past 1.5 years.

Unfortunately, TNR isn’t always a viable solution. Many cats and kittens face harsh realities on the streets here—they’re mistreated, chased with stones, poisoned, or involved in motorbike and car accidents.

In these cases, I have had to remove them from their unsafe environments, care for them, and work to find them loving homes.

This process is incredibly labor-intensive but necessary to give these animals a chance at a better life. It is rewarding but also emotionally hard!

In the past two years, I’ve rehomed over 80 kittens and 20 adult cats, while rescuing and treating countless others. I also feed 17 street cats every day, morning and evening, to ensure they don’t go hungry—a cost that adds up on top of vet bills and other rescue expenses.

This is Balder, the day I rescued him from a low income area in Nairobi in a gutter, crying his guts out. He had chewing gum stuck all over him, he was anaemic, and very unwell.

This is Balder 1 week later, feeling 70% better and this was his first day at his forever home.

This is Balder and his sister Froya today, 5 months old. Froya was also my rescue, and the family adopted her 2 weeks after they adopted Balder.

I have rescued and successfully rehomed over 12 puppies and 4 adult dogs in the past year. Sadly, many dogs and puppies face mistreatment and abuse, often being chased away from shelter by people. Tragically, many owned dogs are locked up all day and night, and fed once a day. It's a heartbreaking reality. Like Poppy's story.

My friend and I rescued Poppy who was owned by people, who locked her in a tiny tiny kennel, all day and night, with matted fur (she was only 7.5 months old).

Poppy 3 days later, all clean, treated and groomed playing fetch and happy with other doggy friends.

Recently, I started an Instagram account called Purrs_and_Paws Rescue, where I document the rescues, from their first vet visits and treatments to their recovery, fostering, and final adoption.

It is really a labor of love, but the financial burden is significant. My vet bills have now reached KES 150,000 (approximately USD 1500) and they keep growing as I am rescuing kittens every other day (already rescued 4 just this past week).

The vet has asked me to reduce this bill significantly in the next 2 weeks; otherwise, he won't keep giving me credit, which means I won't be able to rescue.
