Help Megan Recover After Severe Injury in South Africa

Megan was seriously injured while horseback riding during a vacation in South Africa. What was meant to be a special trip quickly turned into a medical emergency.

She sustained a traumatic brain injury, including two brain bleeds and multiple contusions, along with five broken ribs and a hemothorax that requires surgery. She is currently in the ICU and will remain hospitalized until she is stable enough to step down to regular care.

Due to the severity of her injuries, Megan cannot safely fly home for at least four weeks after surgery. This means an unexpected extended stay of weeks in South Africa, assuming her recovery continues in the right direction.

Megan is a devoted mom to a 4-year-old and works as a part-time veterinarian. Right now, her focus needs to be entirely on healing.

She is not alone—her close friend, who was traveling with her, has stayed by her side and is managing communication with doctors and family. As a self-employed veterinarian, extending her stay for several weeks creates a significant financial burden, but she is committed to staying with Megan through this critical time.

While Megan does have insurance, all medical costs must be paid upfront before reimbursement. This includes emergency surgery and ongoing hospital care, which are substantial. In the meantime, these expenses are falling on those closest to her. Medical costs have already reached $40,000 at this time.
