Help Maya and Alexandria Escape US (LGBT)

Hello, my name is Maya Fae. I’m a lesbian married to my incredible wife, Alexandria, a trans woman. Right now, many LGBT+ people in the U.S. are living in fear, uncertain of what the future holds, and we’re no exception.
With anti-trans rhetoric and laws worsening every day, I am deeply afraid for my wife’s safety, particularly since she is also a type 1 diabetic. For the past year and a half, we’ve been working toward immigrating to Spain through Alexandria’s application for citizenship under the Law of Democratic Memory. I plan to join her through a spousal residency permit. While we’ve made significant progress with the paperwork, we’ve recently encountered a major roadblock.
We applied at the Spanish consulate in Los Angeles and have been waiting for Alexandria’s Spanish birth certificate to be processed. However, due to severe understaffing and delays caused by the devastating wildfires in California, the consulate has fallen behind on processing. What was once a hopeful estimate of leaving the U.S. before the next presidential term now looks bleak, with September 2025 being the earliest we will be able to immigrate.
Unfortunately, we don’t feel like we have that kind of time. With the rapid escalation of policies targeting LGBT+ individuals and people with disabilities, staying in the U.S. is becoming increasingly unsafe for us.
After a lot of reflection and hard conversations, Alexandria and I have made the difficult decision to leave the country ahead of schedule, before her Spanish citizenship is finalized. Our plan is to temporarily move to Spain in early March for three months under the Schengen Agreement, followed by three months in Montenegro (outside the Schengen zone), allowing us to wait out the remainder of the immigration process. By September, we hope to return to Spain with Alexandria’s citizenship and my spousal residency permit in hand.
Although we both work from home and can work from anywhere, these unplanned moves come with significant financial strain. Our income has decreased by half over the past year, and we’re now facing costs such as multiple international flights, shipping Alexandria’s medical supplies overseas, expensive short-term furnished housing, and unexpected expenses that will crop up as we MacGyver our way through this tumultuous time.
We would be eternally grateful for any help that can be given to us to cushion the blow of having to flee early and move often over the next several months.
Our dream is to live somewhere safe, where my wife is not actively targeted, and where we can rebuild our lives free from fear. Your generosity would bring us one step closer to that safety and peace of mind.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read our story, and for any support you can give. Whether it’s donating, sharing this fundraiser, or simply keeping us in your thoughts, we are endlessly grateful.
With love,
Maya and Alexandria
