Hi, I’m reaching out for help for my beloved pet rat, Marshmallow.

Marshmallow is 2 years old and has been part of my family since 2023. Recently, his health took a serious turn. He developed a hard, dark purple area on his belly and his tail has become discolored — half of it has turned black, and there may be tissue damage (necrosis). I'm deeply concerned that he may need surgery or urgent treatment.

I took him to a vet on Monday, August 4, and spent $372.61 on an exam, tooth trim, a Baytril injection, and antibiotics. Unfortunately, the vet didn’t seem too concerned about the tail or belly, and no pain meds were given. Despite my follow-up calls and emails, they dont seem concerned and I’m still unsure if Marshmallow is receiving the treatment he truly needs.

He’s visibly bony, less active, and I’m terrified his condition may worsen without proper intervention. I’ve been told by the good folk at Reddit that it could be an abscess or necrosis — both of which may require more intensive care, drainage, or even partial tail amputation.

I live in NYC and I simply cannot afford another full vet visit or emergency exotic vet fees.

That’s why I’m asking for help. Funds will go directly toward:

* A second opinion or specialist vet visit

* Surgery (if needed)

* Pain medication

* Follow-up care and supportive supplies

After trying everything we could, Marshmallow passed. I’m heartbroken.

Marshmallow’s brother Oreo is still with me, and I’m focused on making sure he’s safe and cared for.
