It wasn’t what they expected.

Two years ago, Manuel and Emily discovered that Manuel had two different kinds of brain tumors. This led to biopsies, brain surgery, anti-seizure medication, and several weeks of radiation therapy at a hospital in Abu Dhabi. After Manuel developed new symptoms this June, he and Emily were both prepared to hear that the more dangerous of Manuel’s tumors had progressed. But neither of them was prepared for the prognosis they received from the oncologist. Manuel needed to begin chemotherapy right away, and with that treatment, he is likely within the last one to two years of his life. His oncologist has since backed away from giving a prognosis, but he has advised them to prepare for the worst and to hope for the best.

Manuel began — and is continuing to receive — regular infusions and oral chemotherapy. Meanwhile, Emily is working to sustainably access a new FDA-approved medication that has proven helpful to many patients, but which is very expensive and difficult to access in the long run. Once chemotherapy is finished, they hope to switch Manuel to this new medicine.

Manuel and Emily have decided to transition back to the United States with their three young boys (6, 4, and 1) to be close to family during this time, to gain better access to medication, and to navigate this international move while Manuel is still in reasonably good health.

As they navigate this challenge, Manuel and Emily continue to model for their boys a life of purpose and beauty as they seek God, connect with friends, make music, and share good books, seeking to make the most of every opportunity.

We have organized this GoFundMe to provide for the costs of ongoing treatment for Manuel and the costs associated with transitioning back to the US. Emily's mom, Sharon, will manage GoFundMe donations to ease the process for the family.
