Our beloved boy, Kai, crossed the rainbow bridge this past Friday. It was a tragic accident that we never thought would happen. Words cannot describe the pain we are feeling, but also the love we have for our sweet, little Kai.
He hadn’t been feeling well so we took him to the ER seeking help and to know what was wrong. They gave him medications and fluids to help him feel better. He still wouldn't eat so we took him back to the ER. They did more tests, but still did not find anything irregular or the cause for the way he was behaving. They sent us home with the same medication and another one to help him eat, and told us if he did not eat after 24 hours to take him back. He continued to behave lethargic and not eat so on Thursday night we took him back one last time, where they did more testings and had him hospitalized so he could receive IV fluids. They called us later that night with news that the X-rays showed a linear foreign body and that the next step was surgery to remove it from his intestines. We agreed, and were hopeful that Friday evening we would pick him up after the surgery and bring our boy back home. Unfortunately, Friday morning while they were preforming the surgery, they found the foreign linear body, and also found several holes in his intestines. They told us that his likelihood to survive after the surgery was exceedingly low, and if he did, he would be living in pain and discomfort for the rest of his life. It was the hardest decision to put him first and do what was best for him.
This event was so unexpected and we had all of these plans and views of the future with our boy. He was going to turn 2 in October and we were looking forward to celebrating with his older brother. Our Kai will always be in our hearts.
As we are trying to process and grieve what happened, we also have many vet bills to pay. We did anything to cure and save our boy, and agreed for the Vet ER do whatever they could. These bills include various medications, bloodwork testing, ultrasounds, X-rays, hospitalization, and the surgery. We now have to pay a little over $11,000 for these bills.
Kenny was laid off earlier this year due to the current administration’s executive order cuts to certain government agencies, and just this month started a new job. Zola has started to work part time only so she can complete her Master’s practicum. We both work to pay for our other necessities like rent, grad school loans, and day to day living. We had not expected to have a large amount of vet bills to pay. Any amount or shares would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read Kai’s story. He impacted the lives of everyone that knew him.
Love,
Kenny and Zola
