Hello, we are the Westerfield Family. The past couple of years have been life-changing. Jonathan has ESRD (End-Stage Renal Disease) and has been on dialysis for over a year and a half. He passed all the needed tests to receive a kidney transplant, but last fall, he developed another foot ulcer. The shape of his foot causes an ulcer even with minimal walking. You are unable to accept a kidney with any wound, so healing this ulcer is imperative. After many months of wound care, the ulcer took a turn for the worse. We decided at the suggestion of his doctor to undergo a full reconstruction of his foot. He had the surgery on May 17 and the doctor feels it was a success. Jonathan moved to a rehabilitation facility after a few days. The rehab team would like him to stay through June 19th, which also gives us time to prepare the house for him to be successful as he will be in a wheelchair for at least 3 months, and on a knee scooter after that. The recovery time is at least 6 months without bearing weight on his foot. We were recently notified that our insurance will not pay for him to stay in the rehab facility and we will need to pay for those last 9 days. Along with that expense, we need to purchase some medical equipment for him to be successful at home. We have downsized our home and expenses and still just meet our monthly budget. Jonathan worked a part time job this year to help contribute as his health allowed, but will be unable to work for at least the next 5 months. Farrah is teaching and taking on extra work as she can to help provide for the family, but this surgery and recovery added many new expenses. We have a hard time asking, but we need help during this time.
