In early September, 2018, during my daily commute to the nearby BART train station which shuttles me the rest of the way to work in San Francisco, I was involved in an accident with a big rig truck - at freeway speeds - while riding my motorcycle.
I was airlifted to the local Trauma Center where I was stabilized. The majority of my injuries were focused on my legs, both of which were severely fractured after having been run over by the truck (according to witnesses). Following observation I was transferred to a variety of hospital facilities for further evaluation and treatment. So far, 11 surgeries have been performed, primarily on my left leg which suffered more severe damage, with more surgeries pending.
Regrettably my family and I were forced to make the very difficult decision to amputate my left leg above the knee to avoid an aggressive infection spreading throughout my body. After spending 30+ days in various hospital facilities, I was discharged. With the help of family, I manage an on-going rigorous, round-the-clock, regiment of pills, wound care and a host of self-administered IV antibiotics.
The road ahead is long and involves prayer, patience, physical therapy, prosthetics and - hopefully -learning to walk and be “normal” again. It is a journey that we dread and look forward to at the same time.
Unfortunately the truck driver did not stop and was not identified. As I’m sure you can imagine we have only begun to come to terms with the expenses, lost pay and other significant financial impacts. The bill received for the helicopter trip to the trauma center alone was in excess of $51,000. Of course insurance will cover some, BUT not all.
