Aid for Uwais funeral services and family support

Hi all,

This is a fundraiser for a very dear friend of everyone here in Edmonton. His name is Uwais Mohammed Kasim.

Uwais had gone with a couple of families out to Long Lake for the long weekend. He was helping out and managing kids at the lake. What was supposed to be a fun outing, spending time in the water on a hot summer day with friends and family, turned out to be a fateful and tragic evening. While rowing out with a friend’s child, his raft overturned. Uwais had saved the drowning child and had made sure the child was in safe hands before swimming towards the shore himself during which he drowned midway.

The incident happened on July 3 at approximately 1:30 pm. RCMP and rescue services began search for him soon and the body was found the next day (July 4) around 3:30pm. The link below is the news report about the incident:

Uwais hails from Kasargod, Kerala, India. He was an employee at Walmart, Clareview, Edmonton. He leaves behind a wife and a son. Uwais’s parents and his 4 siblings live in India. He is the sole breadwinner for his family.

Uwais was a very hard working , energetic and ambitious gentleman who touched the lives of everyone around. Even during this pandemic he exhibited positivity, was full of life and energy, who never missed a chance to help his friends and have a good time. He is remembered by everyone he knew as a cheerful and helpful person who was family to us all. He enjoyed organizing activities for kids in his community and was every child’s favourite. He helped children of his community learn Quran and Islamic studies. He is survived by a 4 year old son. The intention of this fundraiser is to cover the cost for his funeral services, legal services in the absence of will and insurance of any kind and to settle his debts in Canada and in India. The remaining contributions will be given to his family to ensure that their future is secure. 

We request everyone to kindly practice water safety, wear life vests, and follow the warnings while getting into any river. We also thank all the search and rescue personnel and volunteers for their commendable efforts.
